Tall scrubs? What about fanny packs?

Nurses Men

Tafford's no longer makes 36" inseam scrub pants.

Any other tall guys out there? What do you wear? Lots of places sell 34" inseam, but I need 36".

Also, what do you do about carrying stuff? Unisex scrub tops have high front pockets and my stuff falls out everytime I bend over to do something. I RARELY see anyone, including male nurses, wearing fanny packs. What do you do with you keys/cellphone/etc.?

"Bum" is mostly derogatory here. I've heard and read some "discussions" about this to no avail (why I didn't participate) but "waist pack" seems the only reasonable alternative. However, trying to convince millions of people to change a name is not easy. Ah, the joys of culture and we (US & UK) both use English!

As far as the OP and portable storage, the nurses I've seen (not one yet) try to keep extra stuff off especially a pack or anything bulky with weight. There's one nurse (male) who has scrubs that I wanted to find out about. However, they're the Dickies that have been mentioned. They have have plenty of storage (or stowage? :) ).

I tried the "waist pack" for a bit, but had trouble organizing it. Too much stuff crammed into a little space. I found something like a tool belt/organizer thing online, at redding medical. It works really well. It's got a couple big pockets for alcohols, caps and needles, some longer pockets for pens, a big pocket for a stethoscope, velcro tabs to hold scissors, hemostats and tape. I can wear regular shirts now and my neck doesn't ache at the end of the day from all the weight I used to have in my pockets.:)

I wear a carpenter's apron from Home Depot. I buy them for about a dollar or two. I stuff my stethoscope in one pocket; alcohol pads, CPR mask, papers and assorted junk in the other pocket. Scissors and tape hang on a clamp hooked to the apron. Generally, people appreciate the practicality of it and laugh when I admit I just can"t see me wearing a teddybear labcoat.

Karen,

I asked a British female doc at my hospital about what "fanny" pack means over there and why your preference for Bum Bag. I can see why now how "Fanny" is waaaay inappropriate. We have a totally "different meaning" here in the States. I see your point.

Just out of interest, as someone going to work in the US (AZ) in 2006, what does "fanny" mean in the US?!

My wife was also aghast at the use of the term and can't wait to buy me one!

I could also introduce the message board to other British terms that aren't used in the US..... perhaps another day? :D

Cheers

Goodness Gracious, please do not wear a fanny, bum, waist or whatever bag. They are very old school and a bit tacky. I burned my mom's years ago after a childhood of emmbarressment. If your stuff doesn't fit in your pockets, maybe you have to much stuff?? I also have the cargo pants that work great. I carry the basic essentials and my new PDA!! Which I hold near and dear to my heart.

Fanny Pack should be called a germ bag yuck! We had a student in my last clinical who carried so many things in his pack and clipped to it that we called him the accessorry man, he must have had an exta kilo of gear on him.

Be careful with your PDA, especially if you keep it in your pocket. I used to keep mine in my pocket, it fell out onto my chair during report, I came back to get it within ten minutes realizing where it must have been--it was gone!!! I had to replace it of course, once you have a PDA you will always want one. Now I keep mine clipped to my waist, works much better and never gets in the way. Now if I could just lose the pager I keep clipped next to it...ugh.

My suggestion, stay away from fanny packs. There's a guy at my work, really REALLY nice guy, a little over bearing at times, but still a nice guy.

He has people talking about him constantly about his 'fanny pack' they call him FP for short, when hes not around of course.

I hear about these things, but I haven't the heart to say anything about it to him, because he is truly attached to the silly thing.

Just my .02

I do stick up for him around the others, telling them, he really is a nice guy if you can get past the 'fanny pack':imbar

Go to www.scrubs.com and they have scrubs that come unhemmed. Although not male, I have problems finding scrubs long enough (almost 6ft tall). You willhave to pay a little more, but it's woth it and some of them have several pockets.

Oh please tell the poor sap! I remember once I was elected to let one of our male nurses know that he needs to wear more deodorant-now that has to be worse than your situation...lol.

If it was me I sure hope you'd tell me...hmm wonder if they make fun of me for my apron with 30 pockets...you think?....lol
