MEN, dont come into nursing

Nurses Men

Published

I ve worked in hospitals and nursing homes. It sucks. Dont let people here convince you on how great it is. If you are going back to school dont hang onto the mentality of "nursing is a great career there where always be jobs" that was 10 years ago when that was true. do research, there are no nursing jobs. People from overseas come here by the boat and take jobs. The wage is on the down trend, there are more then enough nurses to replace those ready to retire. Please if you are just getting into college pick a less stressful, good paying career choice. PPLEASE research on forums and here from nurses who are not happy with their career. coorprate has destroyed nursing. Dont listen to the few on here who say nursing is so wonderful, i promise you when they run out of paxil and adivan, which is fueling there happiness, they will no longer be posting on these boards on the issues of how great their jobs are.

Why is this OP/Thread ONLY worried about MEN in nursing??

Seems like a VERY bitter and whiny OP. Get over it, put your big boy pants on and suck it up. Otherwise, quit and give your job to someone who CAN do it WITHOUT crying like a little girl, like a WOMAN.

Thanks.

TO the OP. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out and good riddance. The less cynical bitter people in our profession the better.

Peace out

Or you could address questions addressed to women...or maybe you can't

In my personal experience men do get promoted/hired into management positions before women. My facility has 3 male nurses...2 of the 3 are the DON and the ADON.

where is the scientific evidence to back your position??

He said "in my personal experience". Scientific evidence need not apply.

If the message came across far less whiny people may take it seriously.

In my experience thus far, your experience in nursing is going to depend largely on your co-workers, your facility, and your patient population. I was miserable in my first 6 months on the job before I switched units/specialties, and since then it's better, albeit not all that fulfilling. I'll refrain from saying things like "put your big boy pants on" because saying that from the safety of a computer screen is just as bad as being a whine baby. Do yourself a favor, work your way up the ladder and find a way to get out if you don't like the profession -- or at least find something you like.

Hell is what you make it. I've loved working in healthcare ever since day 1 (4 years in multiple ancillary services, 7 months as a nurse) and making a difference in people's lives every day. Sure, the HCAHPS thing kinda sucks (especially for the small-town critical access hospital) and there's way too much paperwork, and sometimes you get knocked about by the guy strung out on meth. But every time a former patient comes up to thank me for saving their life/taking care of them/holding their hand, it reminds me why I went into nursing in the first place. Some people just haven't quite found their calling, and I respect that.

My advice to those on the fence about nursing (Most are from my own experience) - 1) if you're not in school yet, or haven't declared a major, shadow a nurse for a few hours in whatever specialty you're interested in. Find out early in the game if nursing is or isn't for you. 2) If you're still in school and want a job at a particular hospital, try getting a part time or PRN job there as an aide. It shows management you're not afraid of getting your hands dirty, are willing to start from the bottom, and it can (no guarantee) help get a foot in the door as an RN when you graduate. 3) Specialize and certify! The more specific your specialty and the more certs you have, the more jobs open up. Even if your facility doesn't require it, TNCC, ACLS, PALS, and any number of specialty certifications (CEN, CCRN, etc) can make you increasingly more valuable to a prospective or current employer. 4) Never Stop Learning! As with specialties and certification, the more degrees under your belt the more valuable you are! Contrary to the opinion of the majority, there are high-quality and competitive online nursing programs that allow advancement from ADN to BSN to MSN to PhD/DNP with the option of completing capstones and clinicals at your own facility and at your own pace. It's when you become complacent and stagnant that the job becomes a bore. And lastly, don't let others make your career decisions for you - whether you go into nursing or not, it has to be your choice. Otherwise, you'll just go through the motions and won't get a chance to enjoy your job.

I know this was a very long winded reply, so I beg the forgiveness of my esteemed peers! :)

just like anything else, you have to find your little piece of happiness in any career. I have worked emergency service for 14 years (7 EMS, 7 RN, 3 as a nurse leader in EDs) and can say I have had my fair share of days where I questioned myself over the profession. Then I discovered that I enjoyed working with children and teaching so I have recently taken a position in a Peds ED and will teach undergrad nursing this fall, re-invigorating my passion for the job.

You should give up nursing and just be a fulltime internet troll. There may be something bettter for you but plenty of us are happy. Feel free to keep searching for your greener grass, in my experience most never find the perfect pasture with that greener grass until they start making it themselves.
