male nurses with beards

Nurses Men

Published

I was just wondering what you all thought about male nurses with beards. I was wanting to grow a beard neatly trimmed of course, you know close to the face, not a grizzley adams beard. would the beard appear slouchy unprofessional or what? I just don't want to look like bum to my patients.

You must work with the same person I do! LOL.:lol2:
I vary the pattern of hair on my face often from clean shaven to full beard. Don't really care what people think as it looks good with my earring and tattoos, lol!

Good for you!:yeah:

I have no probelms with it, and so far none of our male nurses have either. Holly cow, we have people with piercings in plain site, tattoos too, and some of us have been wearing our hair funky...so beards are no probelm!

I have a nose piercing but I wear a tiny diamond chip in it and most people don't notice...some notice and say "oh did you just get that?" and I get to smile and say "yeah...5 years ago!". Most people really don't see it, and trust me when I say that mine is the smallest of the major group with nose piercings (some are huge!)....

I don't know, I think I like mine a little hidden like a shiny spot if the sun hits it just right, and still keeps em guessing...LOL!

I like facial hair a lot. If it's trimmed and kept neat, it looks great on almost any guy. I do not enjoy the growing-out phase that much because it tends to look scruffy. Go for it. :)

The only thing I would caution is that you are not so hairy that you can't get a good seal with an N95 iso mask. I have worked with a guy that had a really thick, curly beard that had to get rid of it because the mask couldn't seal tight enough and when he tried to shave the beard back to get the mask to fit, the beard looked kinda dorky because of the way that his hair grew.

I think beards are fine but they look a little odd until they get grown out. My husband always gives me the look when I realize he is growing his beard again and I ask him about it because he looks silly while it is trying to grow back in.

I've worked with many male healthcare workers that had cleanly trimmed moustaches and beards. If they are scraggly -ick! but if they are taken care of-YES!

Glad to know it's not an issue. :)

I was just reading through a hospital's student nurse guidelines and found an area that said "among other things, beards, sideburns below the earlobes, untrimmed mustaches, and unruly hair do not conform to Hospital standards, and may therefore be considered inappropriate in the hospital setting."

And right after, went on to say that all employees must comply with certain guidelines including "well-groomed hair, including facial hair".

I was confused until I read through this thread. Thanks everyone!

I've had a beard for most of my adult life.

Always looked good, always neatly trimmed. No one's ever complained about it.

Some guys can grow decent beards, some just can't.

I see no reason to wait till a vacation if you are folliclly gifted. Just start it a day or two before a long weekend (2-3 days off). Shave the neck and cheeks and probably no one will notice that first day or two. When you return it should be well seeded. If yours is slow growth, then yeah, wait till a vacation.

Just remember though, nothing looks worse than not attending to the cheek & neck area. Makes a world of difference.

As long as nothing is dangling like a Christmas ornament, waving at me, or raising a family in said beard, have at it :)

I second the neck-beard comment. This isn't the 70s anymore and we aren't computer programmers!

Now I just wish I was more than just averagely follicly gifted... but I make do with what God gave me! Such is the life of man :)

Good to know about the mask...never thought of that. Had a goatee or beard for 10 years and not planning of getting rid of it unless a new job requires it (new grad that can't be too picky).
