I was just wondering what you all thought about male nurses with beards. I was wanting to grow a beard neatly trimmed of course, you know close to the face, not a grizzley adams beard. would the beard appear slouchy unprofessional or what? I just don't want to look like bum to my patients.
I can only grow a goatee, due to genetically-cursed lack of follicles or something. SO, i grow a glorious goatee, and keep the sideburns and mustache shaved off. I've been experimenting with how long I can get the goat to grow, lately.
And telling people that, no, my name is NOT Jebediah.
Like Bortaz, I'm genetically cursed in regards to facial hair. However, I can't even grow a glorious goatee, just a meager one. There is, however, no way for me to grow an actual 'full beard'. It's not splotchy but just thin all around, and the hairs are too 'curly' or something. Even if I keep it neatly trimmed to some length, I can never accomplish much more than looking like a homeless man. I've started thinning on top, and I've noticed that the 'beard' has gotten thinner too.
It's weird too, because my dad has had a massive full beard and thick long hair for most of his life, and it actually looks really good on him. At 64 he's got a serious Gandalf the Grey look going, and I kinda wish I could do that someday too.

i try to look as professional as i can be, as long as it is neatly trimmed it's fine. however, check with were you are working there maybe some policies in regards to nurses with beards.
I was at a restaurant one night with an open kitchen and the chef, one of the best in the city, had one of these "ironic lumberjack" hipster beards. I remember feeling a bit gross about the food, although it was very good.
I would really look to see what other docs and male administrators are doing...especially the docs, since they do client care too. Personally, I'm not looking to be some sort of beard pioneer -I have nothing to prove. If you really are insistent on it, speak to a Sikh clinician about how to keep the thing appropriate (orthodox Sikhs don't cut their hair for religious reasons)...I'm in Toronto, so there are lots of ethnic docs and allieds.
Goatee here...trimmed up of course and yes causes a problem with N-95's per employee health, and they want me to wear a PAPR, but whatever those patient types are not an everyday occurence. Secondly, since the hair on top of the head is missing and I miss it then gotta keep the facial hair. Go for it.....grow it out.
I work the night shift in an ICU and I'm always sporting a pretty good sized bushy beard, and a big head of curly hair. I've always just told them that I'll shave it when we get the flu epidemic that needs me to don the N95, and no one has said anything yet. I just try to stand out in other ways to distract from the beard (i.e. hard work, helping out, and generally just kicking ass at what I do). Anyhow, if anything, it helps my patients remember me easily, sometimes after months.
Now answer me this.... who has a good remedy for beardruff? It has been really bad in the winter.

Get a good face wash that moisturizes and scrub your beard with it. It'll get under that hair and into your skin. I use Nivea for Men Face Wash. Great stuff. Feels amazing when you rinse it off and keeps your skin looking good. No dry skin problems.

I've worn a goatee for 6 years. I like to grow a clean cut beard in the winter... Never had a problem.
