No new grad positions in Boston hospitals

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Has anyone else heard this? I was talking to a staff member in our staff development office who told me that most Boston hospitals aren't hiring new grads right now due to budget cuts and overstaffing...she said that most new grads are looking at community hospitals in the surrounding areas.

Was I misinformed?

I finally did find a job--it's in a long-term care facility so not really what I had in mind, but it works well around school (final year of entry-level NP program) and at least I'm getting some experience. How's everyone else's job search going?

Hi,

after spending a long time applying to many hospitals in MA and RI, I finally got a job at one of the big ones in Boston. I feel really really lucky that I knew a RN there who helped me get directly in touch with some nurse managers she knew.

Hi ac123,

I was looking and applying to various openings from Feb-June of this year. I was still in school during that time so I wasn't quite at the point of panicking. Maybe it's not such a long time for a job search, but it certainly seemed much longer than many of my classmates who applied to hospitals in states besides MA. And, at the beginning of my search I didn't know that Boston wasn't really affected by the "national nursing shortage" so I had imagined it would be a much quicker process!

Best of luck to you if you're job-searching. Persistence will eventually pay off!

That is EXACTLY what happened to me when I was job searching. It was around that time too that I started applying- as I was also still in school, took my boards in July 2 years ago and passed and didn't land a job till November, 4 months after I passed boards. I'm lucky to have found a job here at one of the big hospitals as well (BIDMC). Congrats on the new job!

I've been applying ever since I knew I was moving to Boston in March, and I haven't even gotten a response from any hospital. I feel like I have tried everything! :banghead:I am looking at places up to an hour away from where I live, and I've just had no luck. Most of the recruiters I talk to say that they either aren't hiring new grads anymore, or they still have internal candidates to place. I don't get it! I worked so hard in school, got good grades, and now I've been licensed for months and they still don't seem to care. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Well the same thing is happening this year in Boston. I graduated in May and have been applying to jobs in the Boston area and still no luck. I have been persistent with the application submission and contacting nurse managers. I have heard word from a couple of facilities but hardly any of them are interested in hiring new grads. I actually have worked for the Brigham for the past 4 years and still no luck landing a job. I am in good standing at my job it has just been a tough market. I am continuing to keep the faith that something will open up soon because SallieMae is knocking at my door...Yikes!!! Thanks for all the good advice I really appreciate this thread!!!

That "overstaffing" looks like this in Boston-"old" or "experienced" nurses have to work overtime, sometimes 60 hours because of freezing in hiring new nurses. They rather want to save money on training new nurses and paid the old ones...but they will not go for long time like this...Physically is not possible for them to work like crazy just because hospital has money but is simply stingy.

Hi all,

Just wanted to see if anyone has had anymore luck with finding hospitals that are actually hiring new grads..

I relocated to New Orleans after graduation with my BSN from a Boston-area nursing school thinking that the job market had to be a little better than Boston's. Well, I was wrong. There aren't any positions for new grads here either. Now I'm considering a move back to Boston if I could land a position (since I did all my clinicals at the Boston hospitals, and have a few connections in HR).

Congrats to everyone who have found jobs!

Try texas. They still have new grad positions. Thats about it.

No new grad positions here in the Boston area. Saw a funny one, a Caritas Christi Hospital position for med-surg float; ACLS (I have it), PALS (I have it), TNCC or CEN or CCRN (I have TNCC), IV Skills (I am certified), Telemetry (I have it, certified) 10-15 years experience (I don't have it, just 3 yrs as LPN in sub-acute care) This is from the same hospital that nurses turned their noses up at just 1.5 yrs ago. WHAT NURSING SHORTAGE?????

So WHY they still organize nursing job fairs if they don't hire????? Why do they spend thousands of dollars to buy a booth at hotels?? If they have no money to hire new nurses but spent so much at the hotels? For who is that business?
