The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

I'm a 47 year old ex-carpenter who has just finished my first year in an ADN program. I have been pushing beds for six years, so I didn't go into nursing school blind, but it has been tough. I'm one of 16 males in a class of 80--a record for our school. I'm doing okay grade-wise but have a lot of work to do one clinical skills, and care plans are going to be the death of me. Well, maybe not the death, but they are driving me crazy.

Working in a predominately female environment has had good points and bad, but in the long run, work is work. Co-workers say I try to see the good in everybody--that probably isn't quite as true as it ought to be, but it's a reputation I can live with and a goal I aim for.

Most, but not all of my classmates are younger than me. It's a tough program to get into, so the kids and geazers alike tend to be pretty sharp. We old farts may have an advantage in drawing on life experience, but I'd seriously consider trading some of it for more endurance. I'm very pleased that our grading isn't competitive--one person doesn't do well at the expense of others, and if we all make A's, our teachers are thrilled. Still, it's hard not to think about how many people didn't get in, so the jokes about C=RN are pretty much just jokes. Most of our class is pretty driven to make the most of this, and it keeps you on your toes.

There's a certain amount of comaraderie among the guys in our class, but no real boys club. No real cliques of any kind, actually, but the groups who tend to associate most are mostly mixed.

Despite a heavy workload, chronic sleep deprivation, and a diet consisting mainly of foods that can be eaten while driving, I have noticed this Spring that my inner child is going through puberty. Still haven't had any pillow fights, though. What's up with that? In the movies, nursing students always have pillow fights.

Wondering what kind of movies you're watching with nursing students in them .... :chuckle

I am one of 7 men out of 72 in my program at USF. I'm 21 and obviously one of the youngest, but it's been tough, I'm not sure how many of you guys are in a BSN program, but its intense! Glad to see such a good turn out of guys in this female dominated position. The male population may be small, but we make an impact.

Theres about 15 men out of 70 in my class, which is much more than I expected.

So, I guess this is the boy's club! I'm hoping to knock out my prereqs this year part-time, and get into a BSN program next fall. I'm married and am just coming out of the Navy. I have a BA in psych and looking forward to the wonderful world of nursing! Just curious, has anyone done the RN to BSN programs? What is the time frame look like? I only ask because the the University I'm close to accepts only 40 students a year with a min. GPA of about 3.5! So, I'm considering jumping into the ADN program at the local CC if I don't get accepted into the BSN program. I figure its not smart to waste anytime just waiting or trying to get into a program. Does anyone see any pitfalls in this logic?

Glad to hear that so many of you are out there, or at least more than I thought!

ADN programs aren't any easier to get into. We had over 900 apply for 120 openings to the CC I applied to. A 3.5 probably would not have made it. Apply to both and take the one you get. It's getting tougher to get accepted these days. I too was in the Navy but have spent the last 20 years in the IT field which is rapidly disappearing. I start my ADN in Oct.

:) Hey. How are you? I live in SC. I am 33,male and next semester I will be taking Math120 (Probability & Stats) and A&P. I have 4 more classes before the concentration courses. Does your school use a points system for admittance into the Nursing program? If you were going to my school, you would get more points for already having a degree. The admittance points last semester ranged fom 30 to 60. 60 being those who scored real high and had a degree already. How does your school work?

My has an entrance exam and that's pretty much it. I scored high so.. I should get in fall of this year.

You might want to look around for an MSN Entry program. It's designed for students who already have a bachelor's degree. It's a highly competitive program, but as long as long you have a least 3.0 GPA overall, you should have a shot at it. I have a BS in Kinesiology with 3.2 GPA and I got accepted with no problem. However, you have to take GRE test and it's quite tough. I also applied to an ADN program at a CC and they accepted me because I already have a BS. I had to call them to cancel my spot as I decided to get my master :) . But different school has different acceptance policy, and you might want to check with your CC. I've looked around on this board for awhile now and I think there isn't much difference in ADN and BSN in job responsibility. Having a BSN might give you a management position after you have acquired a certain amount of experience. And if you have an MSN, you can go into teaching.

Good luck to you and be sure to do well on those pre-reqs.

Look out  female sneakin in the room :chair: :uhoh21:

Your thread makes my day. You guys ROCK!!! :roll :roll

First off this thread is a huge help. Just got my acceptance letter the other day for the local 11 month LPN course and had lunch with the graduates....just one or two guys...I'm one of three in a class of 40 myself.

ANYWAY,

I'm not seeing many guys mentioning LPN coursework here. Are there any? Is the ratio of male LPN's even lower than ADN or BSN???

It's great to see more guys joining the field. I am a 21 year old nursing student that just got accepted to my program in Minnesota! THANK GOD! I am enrolled in a traditional BSN program and have two full years of nursing left.

I currently work as a CNA at a large academic teaching hospital in the float pool and am gaining valuable experience with that. I work with some great guys that have been super supportive in helping me learn. Currently, 3 males and 53 females will be my nursing "family" for the next two year of school! I encourage you to follow through!

Welcome guys ... nice to have you! Today, I was in our quarterly safety committee meeting and I was the only RN that was male. I found that very interesting because there are a larger number of men getting into nursing. Hopefully, at the next meeting there will be a couple other guys on the committee. Don't get me wrong, the ladies did a great job today. But I think differently then women and know that a little male perspective might be helpful. :)
