Nursing Students Male Students

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Specializes in Post surgical, ER, step down.

Definitely glad to be one of the few. One of five in my nursing class of 60!

Specializes in CCRN.

I am 39 and happy about starting an ASN program here in CT this Fall at GWCC. My response to those who ask me if I am going to be a male nurse.... I am not going to be a female one!

Cheers guys

Sup gentlemen....

Started at Cal State San Marcos generic BSN program last fall...will graduate May 2011 (hopefully!) only the 4th cohort in our brand new nursing school....it's pretty awesome....oh and there's 10 guys in my class of 43

Specializes in None as of yet, but pursuing Orthaepedic.

Fellas, i am just starting out on my journey, and to tell you the truth it makes no difference to me at all. i work in the natural foods business now and there are alot of women in this field. I am pretty confident I can handle it.

Hi Guys,

55 year old student starting an accelerated BSN in July...Career change time for me.

David

It's good to see other guys out there, sometimes it feels like i'm the only one!!!

Hello Everyone. Another male career changer here. I became an EMT about two years ago and enjoy that part of my job. It is only a side duty at an industrial facility and I don't get to spend much time playing EMT. I have been terribly unhappy in my current field of electrical maintenance and automation. I feel absolutly crazy leaving a good paying job to go back to school fulltime at age 35...almost 36. My wife is supportave as can be and can afford to have me go to school. I leave work in August to finish my last prereqs fulltime. Hoping to start nursing school in January. Taking a leap with both feet here not having been accepted yet and planning to leave anyway. Such is life. I am making sure to not burn any bridges on the way out and the county is always hiring for full time EMTs if I don't get into school in January.

Very odd being a male planning to enter nursing. Maybe I will go buy a Harley to toughen up my image first LOL!

All I can say is, "Wow". This web site, and this board in particular, is seemingly a god-send. I'm 39 year old father or two, criminal prosecutor (12 years) looking to go back to nursing school (ADN) locally. Like many, this is a much needed career change, and after much soul-searching (and working with a career counselor) I'm excited about the prospect! It makes me feel great to see there are so many other men out there contempating the same course of action. It makes me feel great about the decision. I had been so concerned about starting at this point in my life, but after reading some of your posts I'm reafffirmed about the decision. Good luck to all!

welcome and best of luck....

Hi guys,

I just got my acceptance letter from National University in San Diego the generic BSN. I am probably starting in October 09. I have not had a chance to find out yet what is the ratio men/women , but we all have one thing in comment regardless of gender and it is we all want to be nurses. On my TEAS exam out of 30 people there were only 4 guys so i do not expect to see more then 10 guys in my class. Anyway if there is anyone who goes to National in San Diego, let me know. Take care guys.

Hey,

4 of 30 is better than 13%, well above the national average. Sounds crowded with men, and like you say, regardless of gender we all want to be nurses. Taking my NCLEX next month after graduating in May with BSN. Good Luck to you & keep your nose to the grindstone. Start your NCLEX review questions NOW!
