Stethoscope?

So my school provided us with a low grade stethoscope. I hate it. So much. I have a hard time hearing the proper sounds and it's just not a good one. It's not horrible, but it's just not easy. I've heard from others about buying my own stethoscope. Would you do this? I intend on bridging into the RN program pretty immediately after class is over and all the RN students I know suggest a specific stethoscope. It's normally a $300 stethoscope on sale right now for $150.

Would you do it? I keep debating!

If you plan on going into an RN program, it would be a good idea to have a stethoscope. I kept mine when I did Emt and then went into RN. Mine was $100 (Lithmann Classic II breast cancer awareness edition). It's great!

I would recommend a Ultrascope. Ive had mine for five years and its an amazing scope. And its held up just fine to the abuse i dish out to it on the ground and in the air.

Well, I sat here today and analyzed(with the help of my husband) why I hated this one so much and it had so many issues. It has double tubing, that rub together when you're trying to auscultate sounds. So when I would go to take BP, or get heart sounds - all I would hear is the rubbing of the tubes together. I'm going to get the Littman Classic SE II, as I've heard the cardiac one isn't really necessary unless you're in cardiology. But I definitely intend on going straight into the RN bridge program immediately after I get my license, so it wouldn't make sense to keep theirs.

I have another question also. They provided metal handled scissors, and I've heard those can hurt your hands after a while. Would it behoove me to acquire plastic handled ones? It's not too costly.

I have plastic covered and they seem to large at times.

Hi:

Lots of discussion re scopes in allnurses Nursing Scrubs / Uniforms / Gear forum that you may want to review prior purchase.

I continue to use a Sprague dual tubing stethoscope for 35 years (replaced diaphragm and ear pieces several times) that outperformed other scopes listing to vent dependent patients heart and lungs. If money is tight, choose a moderately priced scope until you are out working. Hopkins Medical is an equipment company I've gotten supplies from for 25+yrs and has good prices--Littman Classic II is less $85.00.

I got a Lithmann Classic II as a present from my dad when i first started nursing school. I hated it... I could not hear a thing. The diaphragm was super loose i guess? anyway, My husband is now using for his [COLOR=#000000]clinicals and I took his cheap 15 buck stethoscope. I love it, i can hear everything clearly! I seriously was floored by how clear everything was... and he's happy with his (:[/COLOR]

this is the the exact cheap one I'm using...the double tubing! love it!

Haha I guess we all have our own preferences! I loved my last littman, but I have no idea where it went after we moved. This one is just too squeaky!
