My dear, when would you sleep? When would you study?

I think you may want to meet with someone from the school you are planning on attending. They can tell you what most students are able to handle in their program and the time committment required.

My LPN program was a year long, and there were a few girls who worked while in school. Can't remember HOW many days they worked, but they made it.

I would consider working Friday and Saturday nights at first; you should see how the program is during the week.

From my own experience, you will burn out within a month trying to keep to that schedule. I tried that for the first two weeks when I started school and was a wreck. I switched to weekends only and that was a stretch too, but doable. Please don't set yourself up for failure by trying that schedule. Find something that works for you, but you need your rest and time to study.

Also I myself, might...just might...continuing working as a CNA (part time) say Friday / Saturday nights, either 11-7 or 7-7...not sure yet....But thinking about it...My classes will also run for the exact same hours as yours, matter of fact I will be also starting in October too ...

Anyway where theres a Will....theres a Way....perhaps something on a part time basis will work for you better,..none the less my very best wishes and Congrats on your LPN Goals!!

One thing to keep in mind...a lot of schools will not allow you to attend clinical if you have worked 11-7. Just something to think about!!

I'm worked two days a week, 3-11 shift, while in LPN school. I usually worked fridays, saturday, and sundays,however, I was with this job for five years, and was able to take plenty of vacation time when needed. Make school your first priority don't jeopardize it working shifts you are not familiar with, I know it can be very tough living on a shoe string budget but in the end it is worth it. Good Luck!

If you can handle it, I don't think it would be too bad...I might uggest working the weekends instead of the full week though. But be sure you allow yourself uninterupted time to study. I hear there is alot of reading required in nursing school. Maybe try it out for a few weeks and see how you adjust and change your schedule if need be. Good luck to you!

I would not recommend it at all. When I went to LPN school and it was a year-long program they expected me to eat, sleep, and breathe school. There was time for little else. They also frowned upon people having a job and working but if you had to, you could only do the job very part time. Quite frankly, I would not want a nursing student working on me who had been up all night working somewhere else and got zero sleep. I would look into working maybe Friday and Sat. nites as others have suggested if you must work. You could also be setting yourself up for a major blow to your immune system putting in hours like you are suggesting. You would then be very vulnerable, could come down with a sickness and miss both work and school. Not good.

i agree, after reading my situation it just doesn't sound doable or safe. well instead of going for my lpn, i have decided to go to school for my bsn and i have made my schedule so that i only have classes on tuesdays and thursdays from 8-3. hopefully, the company that i am temping for will allow me to work monday, wednesday, friday 8-4. if not, i will find a job that i can work 15-20 hours a week. with student loans and va benefits i should be able to manage.

i am not sure if i will be able to stick with this schedule once i have to start doing my science requirements, because of the crazy lab hours i will have. for some reason at my school they don’t have lab scheduled for the same time as you normally have class…nuts to me.
