May 2009 Graduates!!! Do you have a job yet?

I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!

Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.

Whats the pay like?

benifits?

reimbursements?

The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.

My wife and I live in West Virginia. We have been offered a position in San Antonio, Tx. We are likely to be offered a position in Lynchburg, Virginia. We hope to be offered a position in Austin, Texas or Augusta, Georgia. We have been kind of surprised at the similarities in starting base pays. Pretty much $19-$21/hr. It's the differentials and OT that vary greatly.

It's crazy how different all of the application processes are. Some interview thoroughly. Some barely at all. Some have huge applications and want transcripts, resumes, cover letters and letters of reference. Some only want an application. Some are still offering sign on bonuses and relocation. Some offer only tuition reimbursement. Some offer 18 weeks of training (for ICU), some offer 2 weeks.

There's no consistency except inconsistency. It's soooooo time consuming. :banghead:... But it has to be done.

These are the things we're finding.

Good luck with your new job.

Hey thanks for replying. I live right outside of Morgantown, not sure if you are familiar with that area. Wow you guys are really trying to get out of the state huh?. yeah $19-21 is what I am finding as well...some offer reimbursement, some don't....just like nursing school, everything is unorganized chaos...

Let the frustration continue!! Sure I know of Morgantown. I'm in Elkins, aka "Hell-kins". We have to get somewhere warm. We're not from here and miss the sunshine.....

Elkins huh? my father-in-law has a camp sight at middlefork...we go there often in the summer, however this summer I will be studying for NCLEX quite a bit.. Do you guys go to Davis and Elkins???? we have some students that drive to Fairmont for class and clinicals. I go to fairmont state.

Yah....Good ol' D&E. They're not really on my good side right now... Hopefully, issues are being resolved as I type. We'll see this week. Is the Middle Fork out out by Dry Fork? Great fishing there if so. I'm not really to familiar with the whole area. I just want to do my time and fly this coop. I'm too much of a city kid to stick around after school.

Heck if I know....I am from morgantown so I am use to a ton of people, not a big city but big enough for me...Anyhow I moved to Fairmont about 8 years ago, and boy is it different...A few miles one way or another in WV are like night/day...But I have heard that D&E's program is pretty good...Good luck to you, hey I can't blame you and your wife for hitting the road after graduation. If I didn't have a 5 year old, I probably would relocate however its nice to have grandma watch her when I have class/work....Well good luck to both your wife and yourself....By the way, I heard Texas is having great offers on houses right now so maybe you will get something there and by a beautiful home at 1/10 the price...

I have applied to several jobs (at least 5) already and heard back from two of them. One of them said they found other candidates for the position, and the other one said that they were placing their employees first and then would consider outside candidates. I think in my area (at least), I don't know if it would have helped to apply early because it seems like they are still placing December graduates into positions.

When finding a job, I factored in if it was in an area of my interest, if I heard good reviews about the facility (from people who worked there or heard about the working conditions), if it was a magnet facility, if it was clean, if it was not too far from family. I would like to hear back from the hospital in which I am doing my clinicals because I have gotten used to everything there and like it.

I live in the MD area and I got a job on the unit where I am a tech. I liked this unit and the hospital in general because they have a great new grad program and excellent tuition reimbursement.

I started to apply for jobs in december/january and I'm glad I did it then because a lot of people are having a hard time. Most of the hospitals in the area aren't even hiring new grads any more.

I have applied to 3 hospitals, one of which I applied at a job fair. The hosptial job fair I attended I have gotten 3 interviews with 3 different departments within the last 2 weeks. During none of the interviews we discussed money, I never brought it up, but I really wanted to. I heard that it is not proper interview etiquette to bring up money and benefits until the job is offered. Good luck to all with the Job Search, I am sure we all will find something.

I'll be graduating from WVU in August. I am looking to move to FL. I have been told to apply two months before graduation. I am also considering staying at the hospital I have been doing clinicals in (Ruby). It is a part of the university (sort of). Two of my classmates have already gotten jobs at Ruby for August, both have been working as techs. Just thought I'd say hi, since the mountaineers have been speaking up here!

Specializes in SICU/CVICU.

I have gotten a few offers, but I sitll have one interview left tomorrow. If I get that offer then I will narrow it down between the 2 best ones.

I'm looking at 2 different types of ICUs. Not sure which one is going to be the best fit for me.
