ANC Nov Board & M5 ID

Specialties Government

Published

I wanted to start a thread for all of the people who are waiting for the November ANC selection board, specifically if you have/waiting on the M5 identifier for Emergency Nursing. I thought we could suffer together and update each other while we wait. You are welcome to post if you have another specialty or none at all.

My status:

I have submitted all documents, and waiting on M5 identifier approval, physical approval and for the packet to make it past QA.

New1LT,

You have me intrigued. How did you get to OBLC without being selected???

SFC Jimenez,

As has been stated by a few people that are regulars on this forum, I was commissioned in Jan as a 66H in the Reserves and was slotted for BOLC in Nov. Obviously you're aware that the board met in Nov at which time I have since been selected for an AC 66HM5. There are a couple of us on here that are Reservist that were being boarded for AC.

Thanks!

(Just so everyone knows, OBLC is now called BOLC)

OML here..GTG I have to work...just pass by:lol2:

i think there is some confusion as to what m5 is and is not in this thread. m5 identifiers are not course guarantees. my recruiter explained to me earlier in november that m5 is only given to nurses applicants who 1.) have two years of licensed nurse experience and 2.) have 1500 hours of er experience where 750 hours of the 1500 hours was in the er over the last 2 years. anything else does not qualify for m5 in your contract. in fact, most of you who have a course guarantee are 66h nurses (med surg). does this mean you will never be a m5 nurse? no. however, the process is a little more daunting then you think.

see just_causes post on this page, which was explained to me by my recruiter. plus, one extra point: those who are expecting to get into his/her course after the basic leadership course will be disappointed. at this time the critical care course is backed up. there are soldiers who have waited for a year to eighteen months to get into that course (they too have a course guarantees) so 66h nurses entering the army with the course guarantee at this time are last in-line.

if my recruiter is correct, then that means the 66h nurses with course guarantees will go to his/her first permanent duty station as a med surg nurse after the basic leadership course. in fact, you will work for a time (there is no guarantee how long that time will be) before attending the course. in addition, taking the critical care course does not guarantee m5 placement in the future. it is absolutely possible to work in med surg, take the course, and not transfer to an emergency room during your first commission for a number of factors (again see just_cause's post).

i talked to my recruiter at length because i am the type of person that questions contracts in detail. this is why i did not submit my application this time around (not to mention i was delayed by others). i want to be a m5 nurse and i am a few month short of qualifying. maybe next year (if there is a board) i can have m5 in my contract? i will have my hours, bsn, cen, and few critical care courses from the civilian world under my belt by this time next year.

by the way, i am not knocking those of you who chose to go 66h in the hopes of transferring m5 someday. i applaud you and wish you much success. i just wanted to clarify some of the misconceptions being posted. if i am wrong, however, somebody please correct me!!! thanks.;)

Yeah, I'm going to need to ask more questions, even though I had asked a lot previously. I've been told that "after OBLC" I will go "straight to the ER course", either "before or at the station" I am assigned to. A little frustrating w/ unsure details being given left & right ---auuuuggghhh. ha. I will keep trying my darndest to find out!

MBARN is correct. The course guarantees simply guarantee that you will go to a course, not when. New grad nurses must complete the Nurse Transition Program (they may have changed the name by now) prior to attending the course that was guaranteed in your contract. This does take 12-18 months. I would google Army Nurse Corps Blogs and read some of them. It will give you a good idea of what the timeline may be.

For those of us who did qualify for the M5 identifier (with experience and hours and credentials) are still not guaranteed spots in an ER. It increases our chances of being in an ED, but we could be placed in MedSurg or anywhere else at the needs of the Army. I am not exactly sure how it is going to work, as this is new territory for me.

Care&Joy Everyone else is correct the Emergency Course is typically not one of the courses that is included in the course guarantee. That is why many of us chose to wait until we qualified on the civilian side before submitting packets. To my knowledge Emergency and Public Health courses require the authorization of the local command. I would get what ever recruiter promised that to you to give you a specific course number, date and reservations sheet that has your name plugged in. it is an electronic for that is generated in a system called ATTRS (this database has every single course that the Army offers in the world listed. You can not be plugged in until you are in DEERS and have an AKO account. You can not get into DEERS until you have signed an oath of office, or if you are already on an enlistment contract.

I hope this helps. I do not want to see anyone get snowed by a recruiter that is not legit. That can effect your outlook on the rest of your career.

Yeah, I will definitely have to keep probing into the promises. I'm not a new grad & have been a nurse for 8 years, but I was juuussstt under 2 years for ER experience in itself. Well, I will let you know what kind of answers I get next, lol. Thanks for the info you had :).

Do the contracts specify what course? From what I read, you're guaranteed a course, but not a specific one. Also, I was told that the Army has up until you have one year left to get you to your course.

Am I the only one that hasnt heard about the results from their recruiter? I last spoke to recruiter on Thursday and they hadnt heard anything about me at that point...

I made it, 66H (Active duty), OML :clown:. I received the news on Dec 2nd. I was having login issues so I was unable to post. Back in business now. Congrats to everyone who made it:yeah: and keep your head up to all those who did not:up:. I have experienced many disappointing times in my life and was able to bounce back and try again. Anything that is worst fighting for give it another chance and you will succeed. It's a pleasure to know through cyberspace that I will be working with some awesome people.

Hope you hear something soon -- not knowing is just awful. Please keep us posted!!

Congratulations to all of you that got your acceptance notices! I know first hand that it has been a long stressful wait to find out out.

As some of you know, I was notified that I was too old for the Nurse Candidate Program, after my packet was sent to the board, but I will be applying again next year for direct commission. Hope to see some of you around then.

Cheers!
