We really care about our nurses at our wonderful LTC

If you want a good laugh, go and read the description of your LTC facility when they are trying to hire nurses. What a bunch of BS. Why don't they just be honest about it and show a photo of a nurse with 10 knives sticking out of her back?

Ha, the terrible one that I worked at was run by a Catholic organization, and their website was all about how they shared Christ's love etc etc etc. It was such a line of baloney, because that place was full of nothing but hate and norovirus outbreaks.

I have never worked at a LTC but it's posts like this that make me not want to either

Fortunately, there are some LTC's that really do care about their staff and residents. I'm sorry you landed in one that's not so good. I advise anyone who is thinking about a career in LTC to go online to the CMS website and click on Nursing Home Compare. Here, you will find state survey results for the last 3 years and also the Department of Public Health in each state has started posting results of satisfaction surveys sent to the residents and their families regarding what they think of the facility and whether or not they would recommend it to another family member or friend. You can usually tell by the survey results and/or satisfaction surveys whether or not the place would be worth checking out for employment. Keep in mind, however, that the facilities that have the best surveys and satisfaction scores usually have a very low turnover, because it's a GREAT place to work!

Just a thought cienurse, But those satisfaction surveys are filled out by residents and their families, no? Couldn't a high satisfaction score also reflect the amount of butt kissing that the nurses are forced to do by their management in order to get those high scores? I only say this because there is not one session I've had on AN where I haven't come across a nurse talking about this...

Just my 2 cents...

The first LTC where I worked, really was a decent place to work; unfortunately the pay was dismal

and the DON was not a nice person at all. =(

What does the norovirus have to do with Christ's love? Did I miss something?

I doubt any "quality indicator" on a LTC is accurate. They are very keen on making everything look good on paper. The best way to find out about a facility is probably from the CNA's. IMO it is time to find a new care model as these "for profit" facilities in general have a horrible track record.

If I was looking for a new LTC to work for then state surveys would be my first research stop. I also think that family/resident satisfaction scores correlate with staff satisfaction. When nurses and CNA's have less patients and a positive work environment they are likely to make residents and families feel better cared for. I do agree that LTC needs a new care model although I also think that adding the phrase "for-profit" to any type of healthcare is dysfunctional.

Other than the surveys, it is a good idea to hang out in the parking lot at shift change to see how folks look - do they come out of the building laughing and talking to each other, or do they look angry enough to spit? In LTC, if the CNAs look cranky, there is a good chance that it is not a decent place to work.

I think it depends so much of who is in charge. If your manager of nurse director is a nice person the place is nice and everyone tends to treat everyone nicely. When the opposite is true it brings the worst in everybody and the place is a nightmare as I have witness my entire life. Some people unfortunately have nothing going on in their lives and they use the power they have over other people to get some form of satisfaction as if they had a life that way and so many people have to suffer this egocentric tendency. It's truly sad.
