This is my first week back to classes and finally a senior. Yay!

We weren't allowed to pick our classes or clinicals this year because of the computer issues. Ok, so now I have TWO things I hate.... I hate that they punish us for their issues they can't fix, but I digress.

My normal clinical day is today from 0645-1330. Easy enough and I can still pick my dd up from the bus stop.

They told us yesterday in class that we will be meeting today (Tuesday) as our clinical orientation, etc but we will be here until 3:30. That means I need to find someone to pick my child up from the bus or school today.

My ex, who is normally very flexible, has to go to court today (that's part of his job) and can't pick her up.

When I try to talk to the instructor about this she was basically telling me I may need to drop the class if I have a child care issue.

Um, hello! You didn't even tell us until the day before that we were going to be here that late. Unfortunately, a lot of us are moms and just 'assumed' we would not be here that much past our normal clinical time. They just have zero sympathy for this stuff nor are they being even the slightest bit flexible. For some other moms, they are off on Tuesdays so just planned accordingly and then they had to scramble to find a sitter.

Yeah, I know there are 50 other students that would love to have my spot here but dang it, I'm a really good student and their lack of communication to us when we have emails, a program website and class communication access. Why couldn't they post that last week when they posted the syllabus and stuff so I could PLAN my day?

It just drives me crazy!! I'm not asking any teacher to make special arrangements for ME nor is anyone else. Just TELL me what I need to know in time to get it handled and all will be fine!

Ok, vent over. I feel better now, thanks.

That really stinks! I don't blame you for being mad, you have every right to be! Your clinical time is for a specific time, nothing less nothing more. It should be known that us students have a life outside of school! My gripe right now, which has been the same for weeks is this.... I start nursing 3 next Monday. The bookstore opened for fall purchases on Aug. 2nd....I have yet been able to buy my books and supplies! My school apparently is taking their sweet ass time putting loans through for fall and next spring. I should've been able to buy my books weeks ago and have started reading ahead, just like I've done every semester. I've been back and forth to both campuses AND calling them and nobody seems to know what the heck they're doing!!! YUCK!

We get a lot of that in my school. Each semester we have an "orientation" for the semester, which is a day the week before classes that we have to come in and they update us on everything for the semester. Well, last semester, our clinicals were listed as ending at 1:30pm on our class schedules. Now, the majority of my class is working adults, many of them with families & we all had planned our lives around the 1:30pm end time. We get to our orientation and they tell us that the clinicals will now go until 3:30pm. We all thought it was strange that the end time was 1:30pm, but when we asked about it we were told that what the registrar gave us was correct, only to have them change their tune. One instructor told us that we had to be flexible. It's completely frustrating.

Oh and BTW, the instructor who told us that we had to be flexible also told us that our schedule from the registrar was our contract for our times - but that is when we had an issue with the start time on another class. I guess you get whichever story works for her when needed.

There was a LOT of that going on at our school too. The bookstore would say that it was the nursing school that didn't give them the book list, then it was the nursing teachers that would say the bookstore just didn't order yet. :uhoh3:Utterly frustrating!

I finally gave up and just called to get the ISBNs and would order the books myself from amazon or half.com or wherever I could find it.

I really like the teaching styles and instruction itself so far this semester but being organized and letting us know stuff up front kind of clouds that opinion I have. I really do not want to be difficult and I can be flexible but SHEESH!

My classes begin Thursday and only one instructor has bothered to post anything to blackboard in regards to required books to purchase. Our school has a rental bookstore for most of our books, but there are always 3 or 4 you have to purchase. Hoping Amazon.com can ship fast!

I, too, try to remain flexible, but it's so difficult when you have other people depending on you. Our flexibility should not be compromised by others' lack of communication. If it truly was a last minute change that couldn't be avoided, some flexibility on their part would be highly appreciated.

Unless the facility requested the time change, it's probably a pretty good bet that the time change was made to accomodate a clinical instructor's schedule. Then, no leeway is given for the student who has been put in a bind. I've seen it happen before, and it irks me every time.

Yeah, that drives me nuts, too. I hate being told of schedule changes on the day of. If I had a conflict, tough s**t. We had course evaluations at the end of the semester, and BOY did I have a lot to say!!

Im glad to see my school isn't the only one that assumes its nursing students have no other obligations beyond school :madface:

With the exception of the upcoming fall term, we've found out our schedules less than a week in advance. Thank goodness my employer has been so accommodating with my schedule! My clinical manager hates my nursing program. It's pretty much ridiculous.

My issue doesn't seem too bad now, compared with having a class time change on me all of a sudden! I signed up for a specific clinical site, because it's close to me and has free parking (the other site near me does not have free parking). This was back in May. Just got an email last week, that my clinical site was changed to a location 40 min. (one way) away from where I live. I know a lot of people on here have talked about driving this distance for clinicals, but I had been thinking since May that I wouldn't have to.. Plus it's twice/week 7a-7p during Michigan winters. I'm pretty terrified of driving the freeway during the winter, so we'll see how it goes...!

If you have a .edu address you can get amazon prime for free and get free 2 day shipping and I believe next day is like 3.99 or something crazy like that.

It is amazing that today we have the capability to send mass emails, mass texts, post things to websites, or make robocalls...but we still have communications issues! Frustrating.

I guess we just need to remember this stuff when it's our turns to teach OR to give patients instruction. You can't try too many ways to get info across to people!

You guys really need to suck it up and deal with this. I have no children, so do you think you're entitled to have the school accomodate you just because you have kids? I think not. And as far as being told your clinical being 2 HOURS LONGER than you were originally told--sorry, the registrar has little to do with this. The nursing department sends the dates/times/courses to the registrar and they set up the scheduling process. It's like someone at the registrar said "Hmmmmm...let's extend the clinical by 2 hours because we feel like it." If your clinical site is 40 minutes away, deal with it. You signed up for this. In Michigan.

And if your instructor hasn't posted their syllabus or textbook requirements on Blackboard, how about you sent THEM an e-mail and explain the situation??

Remember, being flexible now means being flexible whan you get your "real" jobs. If you have a patient that's in severe distress, and it's time for you to go home, you can't say "Sorry, patient, I have to attent Madison's recital in a short while. Can you stop being sick now and maybe we can pick this up tomorrow?"
