What specialty do you want and not want to work in?

Nursing Students General Students

I saw this thread started on another thread for people that are already nurses and I figured it'd be fun to just do it for student nurses as well.

What specialy do I want to work in? I really wanna do either Pediatric or Mother Baby/L&D.

What specialty would I never want to work in? I think LTC, it just isn't for me.

thanks for the clarification.. for some reason i thought SNF meant something similar to a long-term rehab facility for people who have conditions such as spinal cord injuries, or the like (in my home state, i know of someone who went to one due to a spinal injury and she is in her 20s).. i dont know what else to call it, but that is what i meant!

A skilled nursing facility can/does handle things like what you mentioned. Sadly, there aren't really any special places for people who aren't in the geriatric population to reside when they require full time skilled care in my area.

I'm interested in PACU and possibly eventually doing a CRNA. I don't think I'd want to do trauma/ER.

Specializes in ED.

When I was in nursing school, I felt the ER was the only area I'd be happy in. First nursing job I got? ER. I guess I know what I like, I never changed my mind and was lucky enough to get the job I wanted :)

Want: L&D, OB, ER, ICU

Maybe: School nursing, Peds, OR

Don't Want (I think?): Onc, Psych, LTC

We will see! I won't know until clinical experience:)

Specializes in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

ICU, preferably surgical ICU, but i wouldn't mind medical ICU.

Not want to work: telemetry and med surge (if those are even considered specialties lol)

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I am only going into my second semester of nursing school and am open to pretty much everything. I think I would really love working in a clinic that offers healthcare to the underserved, particularly women. I'd also like to work in dialysis, ER, psych, hospice and possible critical care but not sure on that one. I was on a med surg floor for my first semester clinicals and had mixed feelings about it, but I am not entirely closed to it. I don't think I'd like labor and delivery at all, but may change my mind. I think it's important for me to be as open as possible so I won't miss something that may be my "calling". One day I would like to teach.

Specializes in LTC, Med-surg.

Specialty I want: med-surg, psych, long-term care

Specialty I don't want: Obstetrics, pediatrics, labor and delivery, postpartum

I am in my third term of my program and we have been in OB, Peds, med-surg, OR and Post-partum. I still have no clue where I want to be at I thought OR because I am a guy and most men seem to migrate to that area for the blood and gore. But, just being in there for 4 hours never sitting made my knees ache!

Specializes in Pediatrics, ICU.

So I haven't started nursing school yet but from my experience in these areas I think I

Want: ob/gyn, peds, family medicine (honestly thinking about specializing in these) oncology, ICU, NICU (these are some amazing nurses :-) ) Trauma

Don't want: psych (while I love psychology that's not where my heart is), or in a Skilled Nursing Facility (while I love those patients that I have now they do tend to be extremely needy, especially the rehab side)
