I saw this thread started on another thread for people that are already nurses and I figured it'd be fun to just do it for student nurses as well.
What specialy do I want to work in? I really wanna do either Pediatric or Mother Baby/L&D.
What specialty would I never want to work in? I think LTC, it just isn't for me.
So far I've only had 2 rotations so I don"t have much of an opinion. One in LTC and one in sub-acute rehab. I can say that I do not want to work in LTC. I would consider sub-acute/rehab if the opportunity came up. But my goal for after graduation is simply to become an employed nurse. I know I can't be picky :)
I do have interest in ICU and I am looking forward to that rotation and Peds freaks me the heck out. I'm NOT looking forward to that rotation!
I keep changing my mind haha
Right now I'm set on wanting to work in Critical Care
There's not really a specialty I "dont want to work in" since I see any as a learning opportunity. I'm pretty open to anything once I graduate. During Nursing School there might be other specialties that pop out to me or veer me away. Only time will tell!
I really want ER, but who knows that may change after this year and being on different rotations.
I absolutely never want to work in PEDS. I couldn't handle that! Sick kids make me to upset since I've had kids. I know I will see them in the ER, but at least all my pts wont be kids and long term. Plus I work really well under pressure and high stress!
You'd be surprised at how your want/don't wants change once you go through rotations.
I have always wanted L&D (as a little girl I always said I wanted to work in the nursery). As I progressed and worked, I realized I love LTC and hospice. I have a cradle to grave thing I guess.
I always said I did NOT want ED after working as an EMT. I got burned out with the fast pace, the stress etc. I dreaded my ED clinicals in school. And then. BANG! I totally loved being in the ED! And now thats on my 'dream job' list now that I've graduated. Also, GI was on my NO WAY list. Did some clinicals on a GI flooor and the GI ambulatory surgery and feel in love with it. And wait for it, I always said NO to med/surg, didn't want it. A good majority of my clinicals were med/surg and guess what, I actually liked it and I'm good at it.
Still on my no way no how list-->PSYCH! I know the ED has its fair share of psych pts but for me to spend 8-12hr/day with nothing but psych, I'd needs to be on meds myself. Oddly enough, I am great at it, I just HATE it. My hats off to the psych nurses.
Now I have my RN and my list:
Want: L&D, NICU/PICU, ED or Med/surg
Wouldn't mind: GI, PACU, ambulatory surgery, LTC (not to start off my RN career, been there done that as an LPN. But I wouldn't turn my nose up once i get the golden 1-2 yrs RN acute care exp), hospice
NEVER: Psych, school nurse, dialysis
Want: OR, PACU, Psych, Forensics, DialysisMaybe: ER, ICU, MedSurg/Tele, SNF
Don't want: L&D, Pedi, LTC, Geri, Oncology
LTC (long term care) and SNF (skilled nursing facility) are basically the same thing. I work in LTC(as an LPN) IN a SNF. We also have short term rehab, but most SNF are a mix of LTC w/rehab
And yo udon't want Geri but you'd want SNF, 99% of the patients in SNF are geri :)
It is funny how your mind changes after your rotations. After mine, I definitely do not want OB/Peds. A lot of this could be due to my clinical instructor though. But, L&D/Maternity... you can have it... I just finished up Psych and Community Health. My Psych clinical instructor asked me to apply at her hospital for a position. Since I already have a job waiting for me when I graduate, I had to turn her down. With one semester left, here is my wish list:
Want: Hospice, ED (But not after a couple of years of Med Surg experience), Radiology
Wouldn't mind: Med Surg (I actually liked it, which surprised me)
Definite NO: Anything with babies or kids.
With the caveat that I still have two semesters to go, and realize that there's a very real possibility this could change:
Want: Pediatric, ED, ICU, Burns
Do Not Want: Psych. That's it. I'll be happy anywhere else, but I hated my psych class and rotation. I realize that I'll be dealing with pysch patients and psych issues in any department I work in, but I couldn't handle the thought of spending all day every day in a psych hospital.
LTC (long term care) and SNF (skilled nursing facility) are basically the same thing. I work in LTC(as an LPN) IN a SNF. We also have short term rehab, but most SNF are a mix of LTC w/rehabAnd yo udon't want Geri but you'd want SNF, 99% of the patients in SNF are geri :)
thanks for the clarification.. for some reason i thought SNF meant something similar to a long-term rehab facility for people who have conditions such as spinal cord injuries, or the like (in my home state, i know of someone who went to one due to a spinal injury and she is in her 20s).. i dont know what else to call it, but that is what i meant!

I want to go into the ER!!! Because it's always busy and not the same patients for weeks and because of what I see on tv lol but I know it's not like that. I've taking anatomy classes and the human body is so interesting to me so I'm also looking at being a surgical nurse :)
