nursing school survival kit

Hello! I am looking for ideas on what to include in a nursing school survival kit. My class is wanting to make some to welcome the new students of the next class. I need ideas that are fun and cheap as we may be using our own funds. Some ideas we have already are: index cards (for flashcards), maybe a small calculator, a fun pen, chocolate, maybe a pen light (with a note saying there is light at the end of the tunnel), or maybe a few medical jokes (with a note saying something about keeping your sense of humor). Does anyone have any good ideas?

:coollook: Coffee, coffee, coffee, (I know this has already been mentioned, but you should stress it) for those latenight and early morning study sessions befoer all those exam's. Also a little drawn up gift certificate for the students to cash in (from a loved one)for a quick back& neck rub or a 45 minute nap before a long evening of studying. Those poor little brains can only absorb so much on those days where you are at the end of your rope.

You can neve forget the Tylenol/Ibuprofen for all the headaches you have while in school!!!

Band-aid for all the paper cuts:)

List of resources on the web, etc that would be helpful as a student (don't forget to list allnurses.com!!!!!

I agree with the PROZAC!! LOL:)

Tums, or chewable Pepto-Bismol tablets.

I never would have made it without my Pepto ;)

When I was at the Kentucky State Fair there was a stand with all these little homemade gifts and I got this there and it's very cute and would be inexpensive to make. All it consists of is a little ziplock baggie filled with the following items, with a typed explanation of why each thing is in there:

Bandaid: To soothe hurt feelings.

Safety Pin: To hold things together.

Hugs & Kisses (hersheys): We all need them... often.

Tissue: To dry someone's tears (perhaps your own) so you can see the tears of others.

Lifesavers: You're a "lifesaver" to patients.

Smiley Face (it's a sticker): To help keep a smile on your face... it's not only good for your face, it's good for others.

Glitter: To help keep positive thoughts and to look on the bright side.

Mint: You're worth a "mint" to your co-workers and patients. (substitude students maybe)

Heart (it's a sticker): The best prescription comes from the heart.

At the very top of the paper it just says "Nurses Bag". I thought this was the cutest thing ever when I saw it, and I would have loved if someone thought enough to buy it for me, it's so sweet... (I had to practically FORCE my ex to buy it for me  he thought it was stupid). I'm not taking credit for this idea, but I have no idea where it came from so I cannot give appropriate credit.

On the last day of orientation our instructors gave us a little bag of goodies with a note inside that was really cute. The bag had in it a lifesaver, paperclip piece of string, band aid, tootsie pop, toothpicks, button, tissue, and a stick of gum. The note said;

Lifesaver- Use as a life preserver when you're going down for the third time.

Paperclip-to help you keep things together when they're going out of control

Piece of string-Tie a knot and hang on when you're at the end of your tape

Band Aid-To Cover little hurts

Tootsie Pop-To help you lick your problems and enjoy the reward at the end.

Button- To remind you to button up and listen sometimes

Tissue-To dry your tears of joy, sorrow, and frustration

Stick of gum- to help you stick to it.

We all thought it was a real good idea. I'm gonna try to come up with some to give to my instructors for christmas.:)

These are all very good ideas, but I think you have forgotten one of the most valuable tools that us NOC nurses have...ATIVAN!!! LoL!

Have fun with your project!

A good list of websites for careplans, support, clinical info, etc. I have found the websites on allnurses as well as the support to be invaluable. Hey,THIS IS A CHEAP ONE to include in the kit! LOL:rotfl:

vitamins, comfy socks to study in, bubble gum to

remind you to have fun, a big sister/brother

phone number for help during first year (a Sr. stu-

dent).

LOL Yeah!

And a 10mL saline flush or two...

exercise, treadmil walking at least 20-30 min/d. It gives your neurons a huge blast of awakening, much more than caffeine will ever do.

It's so good you are wanting to do things to *help* the freshman class. When I was in nursing school the senior nursing class was soooo snobbish it was unreal. There were a lot of hurt feelings from us freshman students because the senior girls were so snotty. The teachers eventually had to call a meeting of the freshman and senior classes and tell the senior class this little act was going to have to stop. After that things got better but never really that good. Let's just say there was no love lost when they graduated at the 6 months mark. We went out of our way when we were the senior class to make the freshman class feel welcome, we didn't want them to have to suffer like we did.
