I am a freshman nursing student and in my A and P class we have to learn the 12 cranial nerves. I know that there are a couple little sayings out there to help remember them but I do not remember all of the one I heard before. I know the one was a little sick, but I don't care if it helps me to remember them. I would be very appreciative if someone would reply in the forum or in email if anyone knows what I am talking about or where I could find the sayings.

Thank you very much.

The word is "mnemonic," not pneumonic. This isn't criticism or a visit from the vocabulary police. It's an effort to make mnemonics easier to look up.

Ironically, I'll bet there are listings under the incorrect spelling as well.

Good luck, all.

This is in my A&P textbook as their idea for a mneumonic. It worked for me--I got a A on this exam last semester

I made this one up:

Often Outside Oz, Timid Tim Allen Fondles Vicki's Gay Vulture Annie Hall.

Specializes in Adult and Peds ED, Forensic Nursing.

I had the same one as elby812 in my book, except with an additional "v"

I thought it was stupid at first, but now I like it because it gives you the first couple of letters to help you remember the order (of course, that is the names and order according to Saladin 4th ed. 2007 things change, but that is what my tests are based on ;) ). My professor did sugest the "oh, oh, oh...." one, that may be the one that sticks!

Old - olfactory I

Opie - optic II

Occasionally - Oculomotor III

Tries - trochlear IV

Trigonometry - trigeminal V

And - Abducens VI

Feels - Facial VII

Very - vestibulocochlear VIII

Gloomy - glossopharyngeal IX

Vague - vagus X

And - accessory XI

Hypoactive - hypoglossal XII

Our motor/sensory/both mnemonic was surprisingly clean for my prof, it's a variation of one mentioned before

Some say marry money, but my brother says big brains matter more

Good luck!

Hey all,

Sorry I forgot vestibulochochlear...

I guess I need to review!!!

Sorry this is so late, but here's what I used:

One Of Our Two Timing Adults Found Very Good Values At Home.

I was in a workshop the other week and the speaker was saying a cool way to remember cranial nerves, I was wondering if anyone knew the whole thing, I can only remember some pieces of it.

1. Olfactory -Nose (pointed to her nose because we have ONE nose)

2. Optic - Sight (pointed to both her eyes because we have TWO eyes)

7. Facial (she drew an imaginary 7 across her forehead and down the side of her face)

8. Auditory (she drew and imaginary 8 on the inside of her ear)

11. Spinal Accessory (she took both of her index fingers and started and her SHOULDERS and drew imaginary lines downward)

The rest I did not get because she was going so fast.

Thanks in advance

I found this one very easy to remember.

I find it amazingly scarey that when I read the post, I IMMEDIATELY REMEMBERED

On old Olympus' towering tops, a Finn and German viewed some hops. YIKES,that was 30 years ago and I can not think of a time that I have ever used that, other than to pass a test!!!!! Good grief!!!!

If you check out the Stickies on top of the Nursing Student Forums, you will see a mnemonics post. I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of suggestions on how to remember the 12 cranial nerves.

The most common mnemonic for remembering the nerves is:

On Old Olympus' Towering Top A Finn And German Viewed Some Hops

And here is one for remembering what kind of info they send (sensory, motor, or both):
