I am a freshman nursing student and in my A and P class we have to learn the 12 cranial nerves. I know that there are a couple little sayings out there to help remember them but I do not remember all of the one I heard before. I know the one was a little sick, but I don't care if it helps me to remember them. I would be very appreciative if someone would reply in the forum or in email if anyone knows what I am talking about or where I could find the sayings.

Thank you very much.

This is mnemonic for the cranial nerve functions:

I remember one from when I strted nursing school..something along the lines of...Our Old Truck something something something........all the 1st letters were the nerves.... Darn I wish I could remember it! lol! maybe it will be on the net if you do google it....good luck!

Old Opie occasionally tries trigonometry and feels gloomy vague and hypoactive...

also to remember if they're sensory, motor or both...

Some surgeons make money but my brother says beautiful blondes make more

I still remember them 2 semesters later!!

You have one nose (olfactory)

You have 2 eyes (optic)

3,4,6 makes your eyes do tricks (ocular motor, trochlear, abducens)

5 rhymes with tri (trigemenal)

the #7 can be drawn on your face (facial)

you can make an eight in your ear (acoustic)

9 and 10 both have a "g" (glossopharengeal, vagus)

11 makes your shoulders go to heaven (spinal accessory)

12 hypoglossal

This helps me. I actually can not remember all of them but I remember the majority and that helps me eliminate the ones that are not correct.

Hope this helps!!

LOL! This is the one my teacher taught us!

My book gives a lot of mnemonic devices for memorizing lists.

For the cranial nerves, it gives:

Oh Olfactory

Oh - Optic

Oh - Oculomotor

To - Trochlear

Touch -Trigeminal

And - Abducens

Feel - Facial

Very - Vestibulocochlear

Green -Glossopharyngeal

Vegetables - Vagus

AH! - Accessory and Hypoglossal

Good luck to ya, let me know if it helps

Oh dear ... here goes ... The one I learned many years ago at Duke University. The faculty suggested it as we would never forget it, but they wouldn't actually say it outloud. They just told us to check with upper classmen or anyone associated with the med school.

Oh

Oh

Oh

touch

and

feel

a

... ah...

And for motor, sensory or both:

Many say marry money, but my brother says big boobs mean more.

Specializes in PCU Regional Heart Unit.

Nerves:

Oh, Once One Takes The Anatomy Final, Very Good Vacations Are Heavenly

Motor, Sensory, or Both:

Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says it's Bad Business to Marry Money

Specializes in Emergency.

I learned 'em the same as llg. Don't think I'll ever forget 'em either. One thing tho', I agree with bpimommy that CR1 (olfactory) is sensory not motor.
