Massive Cheating Going on in Class...

Would you tell the instructor?

I'm taking my last pre-req at the community college that I normally attend for nursing. We have 11 quizes that add up to a test grade. The instructor hands out the quizes and as folks finish them they turn them in. All the while she sits at a desk and if folks have questions about what we are doing for the evening, what we did the night before etc. she is basically occupied..Consequently, one table of 10 folks far from the instructor have been passing each others quizes among them, sharing answers etc.

I am fed up with the blatant cheating and the fact that the instructor doesnt seem to ever be catching them, or catching on. I asked the instructor(after class)if we can help each other with the quizes and was told "Of course not!"(thought she might get the hint!). Should I speak to the instructor after class and tell her of the blatant cheating that is going on? I guess this just grates me as I am studying my a** off and making an A, but several friends who are having to work almost full time and go to school are struggling with this class, while this group of cheaters make 9's & 10's on every quiz!

PS...Also pisses me off that this group is all from the local BSN program and are "slumming" it taking this pre-req at our CC and never stop asking me how I could "just go to the community college for nursing"!!!

Yes, you should report it.

However, if you instructor doesn't do anything about it, they are only cheating themselves, b/c they can't cheat on the NCLEX.

If you're going to report it, do so in time. The more quizzes that go by without something being done about this, the more the honest students are being cheated. Somehow, though, I get the feeling that you shouldn't expect the instructor to take action. I think she already knows what is happening. If not, she certainly should know.

I was in a nursing school pre req class one time when the instructor caught several people cheating on an exam. What did he do? Nothing more than make them take the test over. I lost respect for him. I thought he should have followed the school procedures for cheating.

Hi luvs2read,

Check out this thread. It was basically the same thing that you are posting here. It was quite discouraging seeing some of the postings though. I am definitely all for letting the instructor know if there is cheating going on, but others aren't.

Some people think this a "take care of your own self, let others worry about themselves" world. And I say that is why this place is like it is now. Oh well, I don't want to get started!!! I just thouught that you might want to check out this thread since it was about the same as you posted.

Dang, why didn't you say something then? Mighta been a "missed opportunity."

Anyways, I'm in agreement with caliotter3; she probably already knows about it...

I also agree with Hopefull2009. They're just cheatin' themselves because like she/he said, there's no cheating on the NCLEX. Furthermore, there's no cheating in "real life" nursing either. When push comes to shove, if they don't have the knowledge in their own brains & they don't have somebody there in the immediate instance to draw off of...well, the knowledge just won't be there to put into action. Hmm, I don't know, after typin' it that way, kinda makes you worry for their patients, huh?

Don't let it bog you down too much though, Luvs2readlots, ultimately you can only control your own behavior.

P.S. Don't let the fact that they're in a BSN program taint your views too much either (speaking as an LVN, who transitioned to BSN). The biggest difference in our varying levels of education is whether or not the individual had the resources & time to go through the length of the particular program they chose, ya know? (It'd chap my butt too though...lol)

P.P.S. Let us know how it all turns out.

Yes, I have (reported it), and the instructors have been fully aware. Most of them are trying to do everything they can to stop and/or prevent it.

I've lost a lot of respect for fellow classmates who cheat. Some of them I would have chosen to be my friends, but now that I know they can't be trusted, I'm not interested in making the investment.

I sat thru AP!, AP2, micro, gen chem while there was cheating going on all around me. I couldn't tale anymore and ratted the cheaters out in organic chemistry, the prof then gave out different tests and move people aroung, the grades dropped like a rock, :balloons:

Well, I emailed the instructor and told her about the cheating. She said she wasnt even aware, but now that she's had the "heads up" about it, she plans on being more of a watchdog come Monday(our next quiz). She was genuinly(sp?)hurt by my report of this. She said "It doesnt occur to me that people would cheat, because I would never cheat...How can someone take pride in their grade if they cheat?". Well, I'm thankful for everyone's comments and support on this, just wish I had said something sooner. It will be interesting how the grades go now that this is a known factor!

Again thanks to everyone who posted!

Yes report them! I went to a JC for my pr-requs and transfered to the State College I am at now in the BSN program A student in my class who took her pre-requs at the college I am attending now told me that she had a bunch of cheaters in her pre-requs that are now in our nursing class. Not long after a guy in my class said he saw some people in our class cheating...I told him to tell on them and he said, "it will catch up with them..." It did not catch them in pre-requs and now it has not caught them in the nursing program. I do not study my orifice off so people can cheat and get the same grade or better than me. Do you want to loose your seat in nursing because some one cheated their way into the program??

I know you may be slight upset but the fact remains as long as you are not the one cheating let it go. I am first to tell you that I can not stand people who cheat lie or steal but hey thats life. Best advice I could tell you is keep your nose clean and mind your own business. In the long run the cheaters well get theirs. :nono::nono:

In my A&P lab class it wasn't exams that were known to be cheated on but the lab report. Our instructor used what was like a lab workbook that had questions that could be answered fairly easily with a little research but a lot of time to do it. She discovered one day that people were copying other people's answers and threw out the entire lab for everyone. I was very unhappy since I had spent many hours working on mine. In the end, this instructor had so many problems with my class that she was removed half way through and our professor who taught the lecture had to take over the lab.

I agreed with this in that old post when it was 1 student. But 10 students cheating? Very bad! I would skip the instructor and go straight to the Dean. It's a shame to think of all those people that weren't accepted!
