Is it bad that I can't work holidays?

So I kind of got a job as a CNA at a Nursing and Rehab facility, and I really like it. I'm excited to gain a nursing home experience since I'm used to working Assisted living/home health. Everyone there is so nice and the DON is also. Would it be unprofessional on my part if I can work holidays though? Unfortunately, my dorm closes during Thanksgiving/Christmas break and I live an hour and some minutes away.

So you drive an hour and some minutes to work. Unless you were somehow hired with the understanding that you didn't have to work holidays, you have to work holidays. And during hurricanes, snowstorms, riots and volcano eruptions, too.

No, i drive 22 mins to work. It's a job that's located close to where I go to school at since I live in the dorms. The only issue is my dorm close during the holiday breaks and not only that, I work at my home job during the holiday break too.

You said that you live an hour and some minutes away from your CNA job. So if the dorm closes and you go home for the holidays, you would drive an hour and some minutes to work. Unless you've made a prior arrangement before you were hired that would be unavailable during your holiday break, you will be expected to work. An hour and some minutes isn't that far to drive.

Yes, it's bad that you're expecting to get all of the holidays off. It is so bad that you might find yourself without a CNA job.

It will be the expectation of your employer that you WILL work your fair share of the holidays. This would mean that you will drive that hour to get to work.

Nursing is a profession that works 24/7, 365 days a year and you will bw expected to pick up your fair share.

Now if you have an agreement with the nursing position that you go home for tha holidays then that would be ok. I suggest that you speak to your manager ASAP and tell her what your needs are.

Them you will have to make a decision. Drive to the nursing job or lose the nursing position and work your home job if your manager doesn't agree.

People are very touchy on these boards about this subject.

Truth is, it's not "bad" if you don't work holidays. It's not "good" if you do. It is either acceptable to your employer and part of your arrangement or it isn't.

Work it out with your employer. Don't try to work it out here. You'll just bump into people who have issues about people not working holidays when they do.

People have an issue when others aren't working their share of the holidays because it means someone else has to pick up the slack. There is nothing wrong with wanting the holidays divided evenly.

Yeah that's true, and the thing is I really don't mind working holidays. I've been working holidays for the past 2 years but I'm already working back home this holiday season so I kinda feel bad idk lol

My school kept one of the dorms open for students who had nowhere to go and could pay for it. See if you can make arrangements with a classmate to spend the night before/after a work shift if necessary. Or just explain your situation to your DON. She will probably understand and not hold it against you if you otherwise prove to be a good employee.
