Nursing tests are totally different than what you are used to. Any other subject and there is only one correct answer. Nursing is not like that.
I know it must be dissapointing to have failed your first test...but, it was not by much. And, now you have a "real" taste of what a nursing test is like. I bet you do better on the next one. :)
II know what I got wrong and why I got it wrong but I didn't think I had failed it.
Knowing WHY you got it wrong is really important. It's in that recognition of WHY that learning occurs. Now that you know what you did wrong and why it was wrong, you can avoid making the same mistakes again. The people who struggle the most are those that either can't acknowledge that they were wrong or who can't see why and how they were wrong. They don't learn from their mistakes and keep making similar mistakes over and over again.
It sounds like you are on the right track and actually learning from your experiences. Keep that up and you'll be fine.
Good luck,
llg
Had our first quiz yesterday. 5 questions (pts) from one instructor and 5 from another. She says take your time. You will be timed. Ten minutes.
No problem with the second instructor's questions. The first instructor's were so .....uh.... (I don't know what to call them). I still don't know what she was looking for. She totally ignored the book. Gave some hand outs that made no sense to anyone in the class (I know, cus I asked for an explanation from almost everyone). Instructor never discussed what was on them. She was never available the rest of the week for questions. Popped in for one hour our first day - haven't seen her since. I STILL don't know the answer to one of her questions.
"Progression of chronic illness is ________ ________ level." Two girls in my class apparently got the right answer because they heard the class before us discussing it and looked up the answer. Something about "physio-chemical" level. I still don't understand what it is or where this came from.
I understood the material in the chapters. I did all the review questions. I used the CD that came with the text. Nothing like this anywhere.
Sorry for the vent. I (almost) feel better now!
2 weeks down, 14 to go!
I haven't taken my first exam this semester yet, won't for a few weeks but I can tell you that I failed my first med/surg exam last semester. It was so scary! I had never failed a nursing exam before so I didn't know what to expect the rest of the semester. I ended up with a B in the class, so don't give up! Now that you've had a nursing exam, you have more of a feeling what they are like. Good luck for the next exam, and let us know how we can help you succeed and also how you're doing!

I am in my third week of the 1st semster ADN program. I spent 2 weeks studying and I failed by 1 question!
I mean I knew the quiz was not what we were use to and it was the first one but sheesh! I got a 14 out of 20. I needed a 15 to pass. I know what I got wrong and why I got it wrong but I didn't think I had failed it. I know its not the end of the world and that I can fail several tests as long as I maintain a 72% for the semster overall. I was just bummed, I thought I had did ok. So my question for the other new students like me is have you taken your first test and how did you do?
