OK, I know it is ultimately my decision, but I am trying to weight the odds. My school recently offered the option to graduate a semester early and take classes in the summer. This means I could start working earlier, start applying to midwifery schools earlier....I would have my BSN this time next year instead of a year and a half. Also being offered in the summer is to earn 7 units spending 6-7 weeks in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore with my OB instructor working with poor pregnant women under a temporary nursing lisence......It just stinks that these are being offered at the same time! What would you do?

what would be the advantages if you went with the OB instructor?

will there be other third world opportunities in future?

if it was myself, I would probably finish the program first, and then seek the

travel opportunities

all the best with your decision

I would take the trip first if it was me. I would look at it like this...School will always be available and you'll graduate in due time whereas you also have possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity to go across country and gain tremendous experience and could open a few potential doors along the way not to mention the great additive for an impressive resume. I would look at the benefits of going rather than graduating one semester earlier. JMO. Good luck. :)

I would love to have that travel experience. It sounds like a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially if you are really interested in OB. Either way, it sounds like a win, win situation for you.

International opportunities are always there, so this isn't a once in a life time choice. However, there always seems to be something else coming along, and before you know it, those opportunities just get more and more difficult to use. I would go for it while you are still unemcumbered enough to do so.

I spent time about a year and a half after graduating working in Bangladesh and India in children's homes, and it was one of the best things I've ever done. Doing it under the auspices of your school and with a mentor would be even better than what I did, as I was on my own in many ways, without experience.

Midwifery programs are not always easy to get into, this would look pretty good on your resume as well.

Go for it!

If I were younger and with no attachments, I would take the opportunity to go abroad. In a heartbeat! :)

But being older, with a family, it would be no choice for me really but to stay and finish early.

Personally school will always be there, your young, I assume with no strings attached (kids etc). I would take the trip, invaluable experience!! You can still finish your degree on regular time. Early would be nice but boy you have your whole life to live, it's not like you are running off to go backpacking (like I did hehehe) Your going to get more experience for your career!

if it were me i would stay and finish school. there are so many things that can keep you from completing school, so i say do it while you have the opportunity and the ability. maybe you can get with this same instructor after graduation and travel with her. it does sound like a great experience for you... good luck on what you decide.

I'm all for medical mission experience, but I think I would finish school and then seek out the travel options at a later time.

I'm going on a volunteer medical mission to Mexico in June if anyone is interested in joining me. My original post is in the Volunteer Nursing forum.

Are you crazy?? The OB Trip! You'll make such and impact on those women's lives, and you'll come back with a newfound respect for life in general. I wouldn't pass it up. Plus, you wouldn't have much of a problem getting into midwifery school with that as your application essay ;)

i would go on the trip. you'll have an invaluable experience AND you'll still graduate on time.

good luck with whatever you decide to do! :)

Before I opened this thread my mind was made up just by your title, I'm all about keeping my nose to the grindstone and finishing as quickly as possible...WRONG, oh my the OB experience sounds so wonderful especially if you like this instructor and because you want to apply to midwife school. No wrong answers to this one I guess and although I'm a bit jealous I'm sure glad I don't have to make this choice. Let us know what you decide.
