Average IQ of a BSN nurse

In your professional opinion, what's the average IQ of a BSN nurse? Could, say, someone of average to slightly above average IQ become a nurse?:smokin:

Specializes in Med Surg.

What's IQ have to do with what job a person holds? I know roughnecks and truckers who are members of Mensa and I had a couple of college professors whose IQ was probably lower that their hat size.

I think the poster *might* be asking for herself. i.e. If SHE is above average intelligence could she be a nurse. The answer of course, is...It Depends.

I'm just starting school so I may be way off the mark (although I do have two BS degrees which may or may not indicate intelligence), but after reading these boards for a long time, it seems that education and clinical skill are not exactly correlated.

You could be a genius and have no bedside manner and be a crappy nurse. Or you could have just squeaked by in nursing school to go on to learn a ton on the job and be one of the most respected clinical nurses around.

But of course, I'm "just" going to a diploma school - so what do I know? ;-)

Specializes in COS-C, Risk Management.

according to your logic, if bsn = avg or > iq, then adn/diploma = avg or <.>

wow.

dare i ask what the lpn would be?

and if you didn't know cna's...you've already been tossed out.;)

weber, if you're asking if it takes avg/> intelligence to become a nurse, then yes you do.

the very same person who becomes an lpn, will be the person who becomes a bsn.

and it's the very same child with the very same intelligence...imagine that.

that's IF you're not yanking anyone's chains, here.

Education level and intelligence are two completely different things.

i dunno. mine is, and they still let me renew my license every year. maybe i got 'em fooled, though.:jester:

Rain Man had a high IQ but I'd bet he wouldn't make it through nursing school. My IQ is exactly 100, I've taken three different online tests over the years, and I always score 100. Am I average in intelligence? Dunno. Psychologists can't even agree on the definition of intelligence, and there are a lot of arguments against the ability of IQ tests to measure intelligence. I've known some really smart stupid people, and some really stupid smart people. I think the OP is putting way too much stock into this IQ number.

My IQ's about 110-115, and yes, the question is ambiguous. But would someone of my intellect be able to handle the BSN nursing curriculum, be able to pass, do clinicals and still be able to pass the NCLEX-RN, if they're motivated enough? I'm not smart, just average. What's truely required of a pupil to advance to graduation, become licensed and be hired? Maybe that's a less arbitrary was of putting it...

PS. I got expelled my senior year, four months from graduation, dropped out and finish at a CC. Yet I wasn't a very sharp student. Will a nursing degree help to redeem me (another stupid question)?

Specializes in Oncology/Haemetology/HIV.
Doesn't matter how many IQ points you have, it matters how many of them you fire up at any given time. And I say that as a proud member of MENSA.

Ditto.

High IQer here, without a BSN.

So maybe what you are asking is, are there any nurses out there in the world who have made it through nursing school who have scored 115 or less on an IQ test. I'm going out on a limb here and saying the answer is YES.

Specializes in Peds/outpatient FP,derm,allergy/private duty.

I feel compelled to point out that the including of the word "professional" in the original post was not really necessary since it is not part of our job or training as nurses to make determinations about intelligence levels but my guess would be LPN/LVN - 105 Associate Degree nurse - 105-110 BSN -add 2 IQ points "one of the top ten schools" - way, way up there.

Just kidding!! My opinion is that you're plenty smart enough to get through a BSN program but that what the more important questions for you may be - what are your work habits like now? Are you able to shut out distractions, follow through with what you start even when it gets tedious and boring? Put up with instructors who annoy the cr** out of you?

There is a note of humor in your post about "redeeming" - I know you were kidding but if you do this thing you will need to have a lot of intention within yourself to see it through. No sense in starting if you are doing it to impress, mollify or otherwise get other people to get off your back about what your goals in life might be.
