Wish Me Luck

I'm notifying my boss and my bosses boss that I either want to transfer or I'm quitting. We just opened up a new telemetry unit/stable vent unit that may need some help. I'd rather not quit just yet, I need some oral surgery done, plus I've been there 10 years and make great money, and get great vacations.

However, I can no longer work in such an environment that I work on.

I'm so nervous. I'm used to going with the flow, being used and abused and not standing up for myself.

It should would help to know that there are some allnurses.com folk out there cheering me on.

O.K. So here's the scoop. The Vice President of Nursing no less called me to say she doesn't want to lose me. Which made me feel good. It told her it wasn't a hospital thing, but a unit thing at this point, and I just needed to start afresh. She said she called the Manager of the Unit I want to go to "encourage" her to facilitate the transfer. VP knows me from doing relief supervision, and from when she was a director I used to work in her area.

Anyway, the manager of the new unit called and was very interested and said she would facilitate the transfer asap (without even meeting me! But she knows me of me from the times I've floated to her unit). She was so nice saying I had the skills her unit needed, and didn't question my leadership abilities. And that I had plenty of options within the hospital organization!

So I'm off the toxic unit in a few weeks. I meet with my manager on Monday to discuss my "issues" to see if there is anything she should be dealing with. Plus, I meet my new manager on Monday.

But it's a done deal. I don't have the hassel of quitting. I hopefully can make a new start with a positive team. I get to work on myself and lessons learned.

Thanks so much for the positive vibes and your input. You don't know how much it has empowered me to move on.

Yay! So happy for you that you get to change jobs without losing any of your seniority or benefits. It sounds like you have a unique opportunity to discuss your current unit's problems with a fairly responsive audience--I hope you go to your meeting with the manager armed with a list of all the problems that prompted your transfer request.

Sounds like your new unit realizes how lucky they are to get you! :)

Good for you ( stupid me is forgetting if you've ever told us your name ). One of the smartest things a person can do is to know when to leave a bad situation. That took a lot of courage. You sound like a wonderful nurse and I hope to work with your sometime [after the revulution when we open up allnurses hospital].

You're a great person as well and I feel a great kinship to you [probably cause I've been there].

I am so happy for you! Don't ever let anyone pull that kind of stuff on you again! When a group of nurses treats another person as the brunt of mean jokes; there is no respect there, and if you were the charge nurse that is even worse!

Good luck in the new position; and I hope your soon-to-be- ex-coworkers have learned a lesson (and get the charge nurse from He!! to replace you!).
