Wiping butts is a time that is very painful for most patients. They are ashamed, depressed that someone else needs to do this for them.

Well, that is not ENTIRELY true......

There are far too many folks out there who CAN wipe their own butt, but would rather have YOU do it!!!!!

BTW, since, I believe, ALL of nursing comprises some form of butt-wiping, both literally AND figuratively, I submit my percentage as 100%.

Well, no, because there really are people out there that really think once they become a nurse that they'll never have to do it, or my favorite line "that's not my job."

Also it could be a serious question because providing pericare is something not everyone can do, or wants to do. Sometimes when it's brought up laypeople say "oh, I could never be a nurse and do that sort of thing".

To answer the question out of my day, it's only a few minutes here and there, so a very small percentage. I hope one day I have a compassionate, caring and gentle nurse that respects my dignity when I need it.........because sooner or later, we're all going to need it.

Yep they are out there, I ask "what's wrong with your hands? How have you been cleaning down there the 64 years you've been alive?" :lol2:

However, most of my patients are young trauma patients and for the most part are mortified. They don't eat, refuse stool softeners and hold it in just to avoid the embarrassment. Personally I would feel the same way. Both of my arms would have to be broken before I didn't clean myself. :uhoh21:

that was not the issue. the question was raised whether the op was a troll. i pointed out that i didn't think so, but rather it appeared to be yet another person who really didn't seem to know anything about either nurses or crnas (except that crnas earn a very comfortable salary) but wanted to become a crna and wanted to know how much "wiping butt" would be involved (as if that is all nurses are good for).
and i think it is a perfectly logical question to ask from someone who is considering being a nurse. i asked the same question myself years ago. i took the answer, and realized i could deal with it, so i pursued nursing. then i realized i didnt want to spend my time doing all the traditional nursing tasks, so i went into the or. is there something wrong with that , too?
well, since you asked, i personally couldn't care less what you do/did with your career. i am a former or nurse myself, so what??? again, this was not the issue.
so, she wants to be a crna. to be a crna, you must be a critical care nurse for a while.... the school's rules, not hers. so, she wants to know what she is in for.... whats so bad about that? really, not everybody is ok with "wiping butts" and not everybody thinks its a noble thing to do, and not everybody can do it. and, who cares if she just wants to "do time" before moving on to greener pastures? as long as she does her job properly, which, by the way, will probably effect none of us here, let her do it.... who says every nurse has to stay a direct care bedside type nurse????
i don't know who says that. you are the first person in the thread that has said it so far, that i have seen. i am currently in school to be an np, so i am quite certain that i did not say it. i happen to be one of the people that does not deal well with "wiping butt", which is why i have chosen positions where it will not be an issue - i never did it in the or and i only very rarely do it in the nicu, and when i do, the butt tends to weigh four pounds or less - not that big of a deal.
however, i have never disrespected nurses who work in areas where cleaning patients is a more frequent task by referring to what they do for patients so crassly as "wiping butt", nor have i dismissed everything else that they do by asking them how much time they spend "wiping butt" (that was the only concern about the role and function of nurses in this thread - how much "wiping butt" do we do?). i find the question rather insulting and that is where i lost respect for the op.
to answer your question, i spend zero time wiping butts, i work in the or.

if a pt. needs peri -anal care because they are sick and need my help, i am happy to do it for them. some day you will need peri-anal care, hope the nurse doesn't think your butt is a topic for discussion. the butts's that are truley painful for me are those of jacho, pres-gainy and a nurse manager that treats staff like warm bodies rather than prof. nurses. perhaps you should look at what nurses really do, we do care for critical patients, use critical thinking, care for patients when physicians are not around and go to length to improve our knowlege base and skills. wiping butts is a time that is very painful for most patients. they are ashamed, depressed that someone else needs to do this for them. most pt's have raised family, worked many productive years and were independant during their life. if you can't see the humanity aspect of "wiping butts' , i would say, go work at mcdonalds, we don't need you in nursing !:caduceus:

a little harsh, and a tad bit elitist (about wiping butts, mind you). are you serious???!!!! go work at mcdonalds, because someone is wondering how much time one will actually spend doing peri care on people!!!! hmmmmm. good to know you can get ssupport around here, from fellow nurses.

has anybody realized, there are areas of nursing, many of them , that has nothing to do with this so called "wiping butt" business? are they not real nurses, not worthy of the profession, because they chose not to participate in a position that does this often?

i am so annoyed by the attitude of some of you regarding this question.

I'm pretty sure that some people are annoyed by the attitude that some have the impression that butt wiping is beneath them, not part of their job, or that people will pawn it off on someone else, as well (and i'm not saying that anyone here has said that, so save the soapbox).

We know there are pt's out there who can wipe their own butts but, In ICU there are far more who need nursing help. If a pt can wipe their own, when it comes to me giving them care,,,,they WILL wipe thier own. (that's part of being a good nurse too!)
