Today was a hideous day. 15 positions were cut - only one clinician - but it was horrible to wait. As I'm in IT I got all the requests to de-activate user accounts and my heart broke for every single one of the people I know who lost their job today.
It was state funding cuts that drove it.
In one department when the sacrifice was announced all the other girls burst into tears, great gulping sobs, of some sadness for T, but more relief that they had been reprieved.
I feel like Winston in 1984. "Do it to Julia! Do it to Julia!" Dirty and foul and, yes, human and of course self-interested, but demeaned and lessened.
Sad.
Alex, only one nurse was laid off - the amb surg manager. The rest were primarily semi-skilled to unskilled folks - maintenance, housekeeping, admissions clerks, drivers, a billing clerk, a pt tech. Two rad techs. The RRT was made p/t.They have no options. It's 60 miles to the nearest hospital, and no one is quitting.
Gosh, I don't know whether that makes me feel better or worse. OK, they are not firing nurses, but the people they did fire are the least skilled and probably the least likely to be highly marketable in the future. The whole thing just sucks and I can well believe that this has had a negative effect on everyone involved. Even when you escape the axe you just can't help feeling like the other foot might fall at any point...
Just hang in and know that you have a lot of people that are sending wishes for better days.
I'm in NW Ohio/SE Mich, where unemployment has been a topic for some time. When I think of all the families who are hurting so badly, it's just horrible. There's a lot of people who think health care is a safe haven, and the J and J-type commercials don't help that misleading idea...anyway, I'm so glad your job is still there for you!
