Ugh. Rejected from dream job

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

So I have just found out that my dream job has rejected me after what I thought was a great interview with good references.

Looks like all my hard work didn't mean anything. BSN. Magna Cum Laude. 3+ years of healthcare experience. Nothing. While other new grads get their dream jobs with no experience. It just ticks me off.

So now, I do not know what to do. I had my heart set on the babies, but looks like that isn't happening. I am now starting to apply indiscriminately, even though I am not in love with any other specialty like I am with the babies.

Now what? To the more experienced nurses out there, what happens if you don't get that dream job? Do you stop pursuing it and just take what you can get? I am so disappointed.

Sorry to hear it. Is relocating an option? If so, apply all over in that speciality.

Also, I would try to focus on finding a job in an environment supportive of new grads. It may be your dream job, but I will tell you that a supportive healthy work environment is worth it's weight in gold!

Hi,

There are a lot of hospitals in my area and I am applying to all of them. Unfortunately, relocating is not an option. But I am definitely open to anything at this point.

Sorry they said No :(

I know that the babies may be your first love, but seriously: try to get into the hospital any way that you can. Once you're in, you can eventually work your way to your dream specialty.

I'm sorry.

You apply for another job and hope it's not a nightmare.

First: It is highly unlikely that YOU were 'rejected'. Another candidate was selected - try not to take it so personally.

Second: Few people get their 'dream job' right out of school.

Third: Sometimes, you discover your REAL dream job while working at it - not before.

Getting your dream job is generally not common right out of school. I think those people you know got lucky. Most of us have to put in our dues. When you say babies do you mean NICU? If so, what about applying to Peds and then trying for NICU again later?

In this hyper-competitive employment marketplace, you absolutely need to take whatever nursing job you can get until you are able to do better.

Most peoples' dream jobs are in specialties where masses of other people want to work, such as postpartum, L&D, ER, ICU, NICU, peds, and the OR. Take a job somewhere, but continue to make yourself marketable for the specialty you want by getting certified in PALS and so forth. Good luck to you.

I know you guys are right. I just had connections to this unit and I thought everything went so well. I guess I was just blind-sided by the fakery that is management.

*Sighs*

I have applied to other nicus, picu, pediatric oncology, float pool, cardiac icu, pediatrics cvticu...I am at a loss as to what I should do. I honest to god hate Med-Surg and don't think it would be right to apply to a unit I have no intention of staying at for more than a year. :(

How was management fake? Did they tell you before the interview you had the job?

It was heavily implied that the job was mine once I passed my boards.

That's what I get for being so naive. They have hired a ton of new grads, but I guess I didn't fit their profile. :(
