Teach me about Thyroid Problems

Nurses General Nursing

My med-surg textbooks are long since gone. Teach me about thyroid problems, especially enlarged thyroid gland--symptoms, tests, treatments, etc. Got any reputable online resources?

My concern is that per the terms of service to which everyone agrees to, this is NOT a medical advice board.

We strive not to provide medical advice as we genuinely feel that you should get medical care and advice from you medical provider.

Just guessing that NascarNurse meant that your post may have hit on the reason why the OP asked the question - not to gain textbook information but for answers from those with personal experience.

Thank You - that is exactly what I meant.

(And I was not attacking and did everything I could to ask a question as respectfully as possible).

Why all the animosity on this board? Geez if u don't want to answer or if it irritates u that bad don't answer the question. I don't get it! Why get so upset over what somebody posts? Maybe someone wants to share their experience or expertise!!!!!!

Wow. Who is REALLY being attacked?

I was only making an assumption (my bad) that it is surprising to find someone with so much experience asking for a detailed explanation for a disease process that could easily be looked up on a reputable site rather than an anonymous forum. Although I think it can be great entertainment value I seriously question the input of some posters. There is a current thread running that shows clearly that people respond and don't even understand the intent of the thread.

I dunno.........there's just something about a post that demands "Teach Me!" that aggravates me. It implies "I don't have the time to do a simple Google search - I want y'all to spend your time and energy educating me."

And truly, I have not seen one post on this thread that conveyed animosity. The one that I'm guessing you're referencing was a sincere request for understanding as to why an experienced nurse would (a) not know how to research her own question, and (b) would seriously take a bunch of online posters' information as factual.

And SoonToBeRN2013 - since you're a student, I hope you take it to heart that you should not believe everything you read on this forum. I've seen some really lousy, inaccurate and just plain bad "facts" posted.

I understand!!!! I don't take anything seriously on this board. I go to my instructors or my textbooks if I need something serious. I'd rather do my own work b/c that's how I learn. :yeah: I was just saying if it aggravates people that bad then don't comment on it, no one was twisting ur arm. I love reading posts on this site and learning about the wonderful world of nursing...lol. Sorry if I made anyone mad! No hard feelings I hope!!!!

Yup, BSN a long time ago, 20 years experience now, and fully capable of doing a google search. Which I did. And came up with a bunch of content farms that linked back to themselves or information for laypersons which didn't really elaborate on the little that I remember from school.

The information was requested purely for personal use, not as a substitute for medical advice, simply looking for as much information as humanly possible to add to my body of knoweldge which is weak in this area. The ASS-U-ME with the side of snark can go right down the drain as far as I'm concerned. I was hoping someone had some good links for things like online lecture notes, etc that I was unable to find on my own. Students come here all the time and often have links to fun things like cardiac rhythm simulators, lung sounds simulators, etc., and this is where my train of thought was going. My new motto in life: Check your ego at the door.

Don't know how you couldn't find anything. Simulators? Don't think there is anything to simulate eg tele in this area.

Just search what you want to know: "thyroid disease teaching"

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=kjrmc&cp=24&gs_id=30&xhr=t&q=Thyroid+disease+teaching&pf=p&sclient=psy-ab&source=hp&pbx=1&oq=Thyroid+disease+teaching&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=d4d5ffce80577a26&biw=1119&bih=571

...and you're bound to find one or two returns that take you somewhere interesting.

Kate, honestly, contact me if you want the personal side of thyroid issues. No medical advice given, LOL!!!

This is why I have gotten away from this board, all the attacking. Seriously, is that REALLY necessary?? Who really cares, if she wants to post this? Guess if people want to know something, they must first post the disclaimer that it is for personal reasons, but I'm afraid she would STILL be attacked, because you see it all the time on here.

I have to agree with the above post. A few years ago, I asked a nurse to verify the refence for someone who was being considered for a position in our unit...the nurse's response: "I do not have anything nice to say about that applicant, so I would not say anything else".

It is insteresting how some posters can be so quick at biting someone's head off...make me wonder if this is how they interact professionally with fellow nurses face to face (or it is just the anonymity the internet provides??). Yes, some post can be annoying, but please keep mind this is supposed to be a professional forum (with hopefully some exchange of ideas), and regarless of whom ask (students vs new nurses) you do have the option not to reply ...and move on.

Just an interjection here: we (staff) try very hard to monitor threads so that snarky, rude or otherwise off-topic comments are deleted and/or dealt with.

So, we ask our posters assistance in this: please click on the "report" button in the left lower corner of each post if you see something objectionable.

Now, at this point, since the poster identifies that this info is for her own personal info, I will close with the comment to please follow up with your provider.
