i am so fed up with being interrupted & called out of my pt's room for ridiculously stupid things like...

dr needs d/c med rec printed...ummm...here let me teach you how to do that very simple request and oh, did you happen to notice the other 10 people sitting in the rn's station that could have helped you with that???

phone calls!!!

pharmacy..."can you re-scan the last order for ...?"....you couldn't ask the secretary for that?

micro..."we haven't yet received a stool specimen for mr x"...really?? thanks for interrupting me for that."

pt family..."did my dad eat breakfast?"

"how did my mom sleep ok last night?"

"what time is my dad getting d/c'd?"

(me) "i have already updated your mother, your brother, your sister, and explained to your neighbor, your cousin and your grocer that i cannot give them information under any circumstance and they need to call the family for updates. now, call your mom, your brother and your sister to get an update and pick out 1, only 1, person that will call the rn for an update... yes, i am aware i should know if your dad ate his breakfast, but i've been too busy with the rest of your family to pay any attention to your father."

Before the days of sexual harassment suits, I was called out of a patient's room by a doc who wanted to know if I knew what a certain part of the female anatomy was (vulgar). I slammed the phone in his ear! :angryfire

The patient in ROOM XX is ready to go and discharge instructions are written.

I was in the post intubation management of a kiddo - and the "EMERGENCY" Discharge was an adult NAD URI sx for days!!! Yep.

Gotta LOVE Nursing! (And Doctors without a CLUE!)

I HATE phone calls from family members who decide that it is in the best interest of my time to listen to another looooong account of how Grandma had her stroke and how it all started back in 1975 when she had her first blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.....

I hate to be rude and I wish I had the time to talk to these family members but in reality it really interferes with patient care. I wish I had the guts to say to some people, "Why don't you come over and see her for yourself instead of talking about her on the phone to me?!?"

i got called out of a room once when i was tending to a dying patient for a emergency phone call from my dumb*** husband.

i said frantically

him- uh we have a problem here...

me - oh my what happened

him- i cant find the salt...

me- uhhh what!!! i thought this was a emergency!!!!

him - it is i cant eat my baked potato without salt!!!!!

ROFL!!

Poor hubby...

The other night in the ER I was in with a child who was being sedated for a radial fracture and the secretary called me out to tell me that the Mom in room 28 wanted a drink uhhh ok....you need a BSN to grab her some water?

I don't give it too much thought when I get called-out of a room. It's annoying when it happens 5 times in 5 minutes (VERY annoying), but I deal.

What really burns me is when people knock on the med room door to talk to me or drag me out for this, that, or the other. YARGH! Pt Safety 101, people!

I got called out of a room to assist a doctor in another patient's room. I get to the other room only to discover the doctor wanted me to open the patient's abdominal binder. I guess his medical school didn't cover the fine art of velcro.

i would have said, hon a bit busy right now, i'll transfer you to the cardiac floor(unless you work cardiology:uhoh3:)

I just don't go! It's ridiculous. I used to until I learned the fine art of saying "take a message, I'm busy". If they want me to leave a pt room, they'll have to come and bodily drag me out.

And if I'm the one who happens to be answering the phone, I will not call anyone else out of room either. Same answer "She or he is busy in a pt. room, they'll have to call you back".
