Outsourcing nursing home patients.

Nurses General Nursing

Faced with the impossible financial burden of a US nursing home, more families are opting to send their family members who need nursing home care to foreign countries like Mexico and India. I'm just wondering if anyone is familiar with this? We aren't talking metal cots and no air conditioning, the facilities (I've read) provide modern amenities and the care is said to be better than the care you can get at most nursing homes in the US, at $15 to $50 a day.

HA!!! That was great!:chuckle But wait just a minute, they REALLY are shipping Grandma to India! But maybe by plane instead of UPS.

It may have been a spoof but with healthcare being a "for profit" (in most cases)

enterprise......how long until someone floats this proposal for real???

Tres

As soon as I saw www.theonion.com I knew this was a spoof! The Onion is a satire, sometimes funny, most times irreverent and not to be taken seriously. You've been had, Motorcycle Mama, but thanks for the laugh. Hugs.

The spoof was about outsourcing child care, the outsourcing of old people to overseas nursing homes is as real as a heart attack. We know because we have checked into sending my father-in-law to one in Guadalajara, Mexico.

I think instead of blaming family who dump their relatives in foreign nursing homes the blame should be with the system that makes it impossible to get medical care for these people at a reasonable cost and without being taken to the cleaners. When it's real and it's you who are about to lost the shirt off your back the situation looks a lot different.

...Oh, My! I apologize, Motorcycle Mama, I didn't mean it in an arrogant manner. The Onion was a satire on child care, yes. But I have never heard of outsourcing, so when I saw the Onion as a source of news, I "considered the source" like taking everything from The National Enquirer as gospel.

I don't know, how do average people who have no connections or jobs they can do internationally do what the subject of the article do?

What about the unruly children who live abroad, in foreign boarding schools, because their wealthy parents do not wish to deal with them all year?

There is no way on G-d's green Earth that I would ship off my parents to a foreign country to be at the mercy of strangers for the rest of their lives. Somewhere I could not just drop in when it suited me (and not necessarily with warning, I might add, having had some horror stories in my family already of disastrous nursing home conditions).

It's like an open invitation to the home, staff, to do whatever (or not do whatever) they might like with Grandma. Can't even conceive of it.

I don't care how nice the place looks in the brochure. I don't care how nice it is on my "drop off" visit. It ain't happening with me and mine!
