residents and phone use
Exactly my point ktwlpn and CCM.......its just that at times as a floor nurse every time a new P&P comes down the pike.....I grown inwardly because there is always that realization that we wouldn't have/need a new P & P if something hadn't gone wrong with an action/task that would appear to be rudimentary and simple....... For some unaccountable reason this always saddens me greatly. I think it leads back to the majority of staff really trying to do their best by our residents and yet somehow in the eyes of others we often fall short in our endeavors. So consequently we end up with a P & P akin to the one CCM described. Which to me is downright insulting. Please understand I don't mean this in an aggressive or angry way. Just saddens me. Take Care Ya'll Tres

residents and phone use
Totally off topic here guys... but this just kinda kills me...... that we need a policy to help residents use the phone i smell survey... would be tempted to write Phone Usage/Assistance for Impaired Residents 1. Pick up phone. 2. Dial requested number. 3. Hand phone to resident. Post Phone Usage 1. Hang phone up. 2. Assist resident to location of choice. sigh Be Well Tres slightly cranky tres this evening if truth be told.....

Considering FT agency, a few questions...
Hi Guys.... I'm an LPN new to agency. The agency I signed with has only one facility in my immediate area. (e.g. I don't want to drive more than 15 miles.) So at the one facility they pay 30$ an hour. I picked up 14 shifts with them for this month. The rest of the time I do per diem $25 an hour at our other area ltc/sub-acutes. Since they aren't contracted with the agency I work with it works well for me. When I get cancelled I have enough time to call schedulers and pick up another shift. Works really well for me. Though I suspect it may be different for RN's. Be Well Tres

do you check you license for any discipline?
I looked up mine...clean as a whistle....however I had lost the direct link to the AG site.....so I went in the long way.... interestingly enough when going the long way....license information was under the subdivision of "consumer complaints". anyone else think "wow that explains a lot!!!"? Tres

I want her fired!!!!
and this is why I will probably not return to sub acute/ltc.....I'll either suck it up and take the pay cut to work with my favorite doc or return to social work..... too many times I have found myself saying "Sir/Ma'am in the state of New Jersey verbal violence is considered the same as physical assault. You have a choice to make: We can discuss this in a calm rational manner or I can finish dialing 911." and usually I'm pretty darn good at diffusing situations, but some folks are bullies and think nurses are safe targets. no bulls eye on my back Tres

funny story
Last night at work we had yet another "honorary full moon." More than the usual amount of sundowners circled around my med cart. As I give them their meds, oddly enough they start to disperse. Except for one....she says "What about me?" I say "I'm sorry Miss Mary, but I can't give you anything, Ann is your nurse tonight." Miss Mary: "Well can't you just make a mistake and give me something anyhow?" :omy: I love our rezzies.... Tres

How do you get through YOUR day?
I wear my grandfather's St Dymphna medal pinned to the inside of my ummmm brassiere...I swear I'm turning into my grandmother... But I figure who to better understand a nurse than the patron saint of "mental and nervous disorders." Cause I swear there are days we must be DSM diagnosable to keep returning to work. Tres

wrongfully acused
Roy, I was once accused by our medical director of writing an order for lasix 40mg po qd x 7 days dx CHF. When our DNS "discussed" this with him he changed his story to "Well, she was diagnosing, she had no right to write "CHF". When our DNS pointed out this patient had a well documented history of CHF and at the time had developed LLE anasarca, crackles in the RLL and SpO2 sat was now 94% on RA@rest as opposed to 97% Dr Mr Wonderful changed his story again and stated "What you people did to her was too harsh." What initially set him off was the fact when I spoke to him I actually gasp....used a medical term! Anasarca....so for this he saw fit to place my license in jeopardy and if I hadn't had back up....potential jail time for prescribing w/o a license......Nice guy. My point is I get how scary all of this is. The other posters have given salient advice. My thoughts are with you. Please keep us informed. Tres

HELP,I have to clean my sons room today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi. My name is Tres and I am a neatfreak. My son is 16 and we have been battling over his room since he was 11. It is the only bone of contention in our relationship. (Yes I totally realize how blessed we are :redpinkhe ) However, this is my take on the situation: I work, pay the mortgage, bills etc, put money aside for his college expenses, do the marketing, laundry, meals, yardwork, basic car maintenance, home repairs and housework. In short like all parents I bust my butt to provide for us. His room was so bad there were dust rhinoceri busily mating creating a whole new advanced indestructable species. SUO's (stains of unknown origin) that even the most fearless researcher would have been hesitant to culture. Food particles with peculiar growths. Scents to entice the fussiest of Sasquatch(s) down from the hills to mate. In light of how hard we work, I find the above disrespectful and indicative of a burgeoning sense of entitlement. (Your mileage will vary on that perspective!) I took my son aside and went "old school." As in "You may be a teenager, however I see you as a young adult. Question: Are you a member of this family or do you board here?" (Toss in Mommy death stare...) Son (tossing in look of "oh crap, wish I had a different Mom.") says "Family member." Me: "Well, when I was your age, your Oma worked, like I do now. I cleaned the house, did the laundry and marketing, and made dinner four nights a week while maintaining an "A" average....care to explain to me how you are going to participate?" (Yeah I know even I can barely believe I did the "when I was your age I walked 5 miles through the snow chased by rabid hellhounds, barefoot, while selling pencils to get to school." approach.) Son "I could clean my room." So once a week I say "When are you cleaning your room." He usually says "Now." I say "Thank You." Well, hallelujah and it only took 5 years!!!!! And commuter I hate to think of you in a messy space. I'm calling "Clean House". Just one thing, when Niecy and the crew get there...give Mat my phone number. :loveya: Tres who tried closing the door, but the knob was too sticky to touch

Hospitals That Phase Out LPNs
Psalm, Both of our local hospitals went through a phase were they would advertise "All RN Care, All the Time". 3 years later....hiring LPNs back without the proviso that they must become RNs within a specified time frame. I know it doesn't answer your excellent questions. I did think though it was an interesting tidbit. Tres
