help please
thank you.I would like to think that I am actually being directed by someone with some type of credential, for the safety of my own license.I have never heard of this before.Director of nursing has always seemed to be rn or above.I just wonderd the legality of it all.I wondered how certain things get signed and all that stuff.Maybe I just always assumed you had to be an rn.Its hard to know what you can or cant do,anymore.I want to be careful.

Nurses Smoking
I am a smoker.I have never even really tried:smokin: to quit.I absolutly hate the smell, and hate the thought of smelling this way.I try hard to make sure I dont.I dont smoke around certain situations or people.I am finally ready to quit.I enjoy smoking,I know that sounds horrible, but after 17 years,it is a big part of me.It has came to the point that I have to let it go,or I will regret it!!!!!!By the way I am a procastenator! COOL PEACH,YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To all the "Old School" Nurses
In ltc for 15 years, and YES,people have come to the conclusion that they are at the Hilton, and expect mints on their pillow!I mostly think it is the families, not so much the residents themselves. The families seem so paranoid at the thought of "the nursing home!"Sometimes, nothing you do is good enough! It gets so rediculous, there ought to be boundaries for these types of family members, instead we bend over backwards for them, while the little old lady with no family, does just fine!

Told that over time "I would lessen my concern for change"
Kstec, I agree with your concern 100% I think numbness does set in,as I have been in 15 years now.I have never understood the way that our society cuddles prisoners, and then we staff our nh the way we do.It is mostly about the money,in my opinion, just ask any admission coordinator!!!!Something has to change. The sorry thing is,we see neglect,in little ways each day,as someone has to wait.....There wait becomes, how long?It is not a cruel and intentional act,but a real factual one, that sometimes can not be avoided, because of the staffing ratio.I dont know, and have never met a fellow worker that doesnt think more staff is needed to give the complete and adequat care needed for these people. Thanks for your post! I cant say that I am completly numb.I want to stay,to help and try to make a difference!I get fedup at times, but cant see myself leaving.I dont want to give up on these people! It is because of us that stay and push on that they get the half way decent care that they deserve!! I wish I had the answers.I love taking care of the elderly!!

Anybody else work with a "super nurse?"
we had this lady at my job, that told the nurse,"you must be a "hood wink!"The lady couldnt get over how she was always on top of everything, and seemed so perfect. It has become a joke now,we all refer to anyone with outstanding work ethics,as "hood winks!"I had to look it up in the dictionary, sure enough the woed does exist!

Nurse to patient ratio in LTC
I think it stands up with the most of them.50 to 1 sounds bad,but with 3 cna's and the lpn if needed, its buyable. We usually have only 1 nurse on nights for 58.A much better deal would be 2 nurses, but this is ltc we are talking about:bugeyes:!!Good luck to you!

What besides the obvious do state inspectors look for in LTC?
Thanks for all this!We are in our window now, where I work. This is nice to go by,to hit on hot spots and the basics, that sometimes we forget!!!

What besides the obvious do state inspectors look for in LTC?
The obvious, and then anything else that arrises! They are big on follow-up cahrting,pt.care, labs md notifications. They are very big on activities, postioning, and dietary.Seems each year they hit hard on any certain area.BEHAVIORS are a real biggie.Always make big issues out of any contact kind of behaviors.

ted hose
Hi,Iwork in ltc.Do any of you find, that the ted hose are often not applied. This seems to be a big problem. There are a select few that always have them on,then there are those 5 or so that dont.

male and female alzeimers residents in ltcf
It seems like more and more alzheimer patients I have seen are younger, and fully mobile. When you get alot of these in one place they tend to interact with one another. The male and female thing with these patients is a very hard thing. The facility I am at is not an alzeimers unit, but we do have all the alarms, and we do really well with watching them.Needless to say we have had some instances where 2 will connect. When something happens{which it shouldnt,I know}but it does, what exactly is the right way to handle it?I know all the procedures. What I mean is how can you determine who initiated what, and properly follow through?

the RN's appearance
Yes I to,and I speak also for my co-workers,"I am a gum chewing, makeup wearing, jewlry wearing, perfume smelling nurse, and a da- good one,I might add. Please excuse my run ons! Hey,we can add to this and see how much personal input we collect!!

I'm supposed to wear an "Ask me if I washed my hands!" button?!
I think that if nurses will have to wear such a thing,It cant stop there. What about all the restuants, the people that work in many other areas, where handwashing, does play a big role in controlling the spread of germs.Handwashing is for everyone, all the time, this day and age.I mean the children at schools should alcohol gel after every recess and bathroom break!! I do need to add that at my daughters school, they do do this.My daughter is 7 and she has been well trained on the handwashing and the importance.I think the message is getting out.
