Nursing school with a GED.

Nurses General Nursing

I was told it would be very difficult for me to get into a nursing program because I have a GED and not a highschool diploma. I haven't taken my prerequisites yet but I don't wanna bother if I'm not going to get into the nursing program due to me having a GED. Are there any registered nurses here with a GED rather than a High school dipolma? I really don't know what to do... Or if me having a GED really matters. Help? :(

Go for it. I got my GED in '96 and now I am an official nursing student of Fall '06. I never heard any negativity toward anyone with a GED trying to get into nursing school. Good luck and try to get those prereqs out of the way.

Like many who have posted before me, I have a GED. Mine came about as a result of a chronic illness in high school, which caused the adminstration to want me to repeat a year, despite still ranking very high in my class. In all honesty, it was a money issue- they didn't want to have to pay someone to give me the state-required tutoring that "homebound" students receive. I dropped out at 17 and began taking pre-reqs at the junior college as my illness allowed, and as soon as I turned 18 I got my GED. At around 50 credits, I was applied to several very competetive BSN programs and was accepted into each. I just graduated summa cum laude from my first choice school, and have taken a job in neonatal intensive care. Do not let anyone discourage you from what you want, it absolutely can be done.:nurse:

DH tested for GED at age 17.

Recently finished bsn program with top marks.

Now works ICU.

You should have no porblems.

Good luck!

I have a GED and graduated from Nursing School in 1992 and graduated this past april with my BSN So go for it. Good Luck.

At 17 got pregnant with twins, dropped out of school and got my GED. Became a single mom and struggled with poverty through most of my adult life. Was told I would never do anything with my life and had no support even from family.

Last conversation with my dad was a couple years ago discussing how I finally wanted to follow my dream and become a Nurse (twins are now 19 and in college too). He said I sucked at school and would never make it, and was so negative the entire conversation. I told him I appreciated the fact that he was such a supportive person and could believe in me!! I cried like a baby but woke up the next day refreshed and renewed. Unreal.

It shattered me but a year later I started taking the required high school prereqs at the local community college enrolled as a liberal arts major. I could get financial aid when at college so that is where I took it vs the local night school. I did not have the money to pay for books or classes.

To make a long story short, I was accepted into two Rn programs starting in the fall!! One is ADN, one BSN! My GPA is 3.92 and I am loving every minute of the rigors of school again! I should NEVER have listened to the naysayers who held me back all these years!

My only concern these days is which one will I choose and I am scared of making the wrong choice.

You should not have any problems a GED is considered a diploma i have my GED and i am currently going to college to become a medical assistant then i will go for my LPN then my RN good luck to you

Your story is truly inspirational. I hope more people look at you and what you can accomplish. I think that is awesome that you are doing what you are doing.

Down with the naysayers!

i did it. go for it! you should have no problem. good luck!

Got GED at the age of 27 after got injured ( read my bio). Went to community college and was not accepted to nursing after several times of attemp. After earning two associate degrees, I was finally get accepted in a community college nursing program. Working full time and raising my child while attending nursing school were too much to handle for me; i failed Med-Surg and was not given a second chance to continue as the school policy.

No school for me for a year to give myself a rest but deep inside of me was a nagging feeling of wanting to continue my dream of finishing college although I did not know where to start. Still down and wounded, I dared to apply to another school that had a bachelor nursing program. After almost a year of completing the some of the prerequisite courses, I got accepted. Learning from my previous mistakes, I changed my strategy and studied very hard to pass all of the classes I was taking.

The sacrifices and suffering I have experienced just to make it through the nursing school cannot be summarized in few sentenses here. Finally, I was able to graduate.

Your determination and willingness to adopt new strategy have direct impact on your ability to succeed in nursing school than your GED.

U could only go to a two year program, which most people do anyway, than transfer to a BSN program. I dont think you should have any problem getting into a two year program. Good luck to you
