Im furious at the moment because a nurse got denied employment because of a credit check. This nurse who happens to be a friend of mine has every certification obtainable, cannot get employment?

Her references were excellent, as well as her work history. She was offered the job pending background checks. Poor credit prevented her employment.

Her bad credit is due to divorce a year ago.

So.........What are your thoughts? It seems more and more companies/people are using credit to base judgement. Geez, now the library can mark up your credit if you fail to return a book. SO>>>>>>>>how do you feel.

Was this a consumer check or a credit check? There's a difference between the two. There was a thread recently about this. If it was a bad consumer check, it possibly had something to do with the divorce, I really don't know.

From what I understand, they usually don't do a credit check unless the person is going to be directly handling money, or working somehow in collections. But when you go in for employment, there is a clause on the application about a consumer check, and that not in all cases they do a credit check unless there's a specific reason.

Just curious, who is the hospital run by? Aligent or any others?

Your friend is entitled to ask for a copy of the check, and have your friend be sure that everything is correct on it. Recently there was a nurse on here whose SS number was stolen. The perpetrator then went on to do many crimes under the nurse's name. Every time she goes in for a job, there's something new that this other lady has done. She was told to carry a letter from law enforcement every time she went in for a job explaining the situation.

I do hope your friend can get things worked out. It sounds like she's been through a lot and trying to put her life back together. My best to her.

I would also be furious if I was in thier position. The way you spend your money doesn't necessarily reflect your work habits. It would be hard to fight, but I hope they at least try. I had no idea that the library could effect your credit, that is way to extreme!

Where was this? It's pretty scary! I'd imagine with all of the DW's health issues and subsequent unemployment in the past few years, that our credit probably isn't perfect. So this means we can never get a job? That's ridiculous! What about those people who have bankruptcies, etc? They must be the Spawn of Satan.

Personally I think that the employer should not even dare make a credit check. A criminal check and previous employment check it sufficient.

I have been worried to death about this happening to me upon graduation. I am a victim of identity theft and many people think that is easy "wiped" off and cleared but it is not. It has left a huge dent in my credit.

I would dig deep and I would fina a clause somewhere, somehow that prevents this type of discrimination. Because that is exactly what this is. keep us posted on this matter i'm curious to find out the end results. take care....

I know that in the State of Minnesota one can not obtain a nurses liscense if they have any history of writting bad checks because it is considered theft and those who have a history of theft can not work with vonerable people. Could it be anything to do with something like that?

We had a nurse who was putting in appeals for this, I don't know how it worked out as she was terminated before anything was approved/disapproved.

A little hard to improve credit and get out of debt without a JOB. Doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe this will explain this a bit more. I didn't read the whole article, but it explains what a consumer check is.

Also, if you go to http://www.ask.com, and type in the question: "What is an employment consumer report?" You'll get a few other responses. If you get some time, you may want to do some reading.

Also, maybe it depends on the state in which you seek employment. Recently, I was offered a job and I did pass the consumer report despite the fact that my credit isn't in the greatest shape due to some medical problems. However, I didnt end up working that job because of employee health. It's a long story, but anyway, here's an answer to your question.

If it isn't illegal, it sure oughta be. We get checked out up, down and sideways as it is; this is just another way to invade what tiny little shred of privacy we might have. :angryfire
