New rules about going online to listen to You Tube!

Nurses General Nursing

My hospital has been very lenient about internet usage at work. I always thought it was abused by a lot of people, turning the nurses station into a You Tube party scene. Today one of the supervisors warned that they are going to start monitoring people and they don't want people to use the internet for non work related stuff.

We got an email memo many months ago warning everyone not to go to video or audio streams. It got totally ignored. Apparently it takes up bandwidth on the hospital server? We haven't gotten any recent memos.

They introduced the internet only about 3 years ago at work. At first you had to log in under your own password, but then they made it so you can go on without personally logging in.

So, I heard some big gripping today. It's funny how when you've never had something, you don't miss it, but if you've had it and it gets taken away, you feel persecuted. I think it might improve the work ethic and make a more professional atmosphere at my hospital.

I've heard about people actually getting fired for their use of the computers at the workplace so those who are guilty should be thankful that they are getting off with a warning. Why aren't they all out on the floor doing something or charting anyway? Play with your computer on your time, not the patient's time. That's what I say. And I spend a lot of time just on this site alone. I still couldn't imagine neglecting my duties though. That's pretty bold.

Streaming video - which YouTube is - does take a lot of bandwidth. And if the hospital server is already overburdened it degrades service.

My sister's workplace banned myspace after it was noted that it affected productivity!! :lol2:

The computer system is their property so they can set legitimate restrictions....

what next?

take away some of our pts, too????????

I think that is ridiculous. Why do people always think work environments have to be so strict? I always hear the same criticism, "Work is only for work." It is like they want you to become a robot for 8 or 12 hours. No laughing, no talking, no eating or drinking, etc.

A happy employee is a better employee. But I can see it now, those nurses were laughing--HOW UNPROFESSIONAL!! My current job, doesnt really involve nursing but they treat me like gold. I can ...gasp.... surf the internet among other things. I will tell you this, I am a better and more productive employee for them than I ever was for the hospital.

Look at the successful companies today, what company right now is doing better than Google? Now research their work environment.

Totally agree with you.

And, totally agree the workplace is not appropriate for youtube.

I disagree. I think listening the You Tube streams at the nurses station makes us look unprofessional and immature. Hospitals are serious places and we shouldn't be blatently looking like we are goofing off at the nurses station.

I think a lot of companies are grappling with the fact that surfing the internet on company time is a problem at times. What set this off is that many were abusing the privilage, going to inappropriate sites, and using up bandwidth. I don't see why employers need to cater to their employees' internet addictions.

We have some strict "surf control access" where I work. You tube, myspace, etc., are definite no-no's !!! Virus attack plus bandwidth.

Can't hardly blame them. As long as I can get on allnurses and amazon, I'm happy. :D

It's bad enough that I get the "stink eye" from patient's families and I'm sitting at the desk charting at the computer. I mean, how *dare* I sit for a moment to chart that their precious loved one just started hollering about how their son/daughter/next-door neighbor is an attorney and will "sue my ass" if I miss their IV stick..:uhoh3: -- I can only imagine it would be worse if I were watching Harry Potter Puppet Pals - or worse - on YouTube.

The nurses' station is a highly visible place in our ER, sure, we talk and joke around with one another, but it's done with some holding back. That's why we go to the local bar after hours together, no name tags, no uniforms means that we can have a good time without an audience.

In all honesty as long as you arent downloading the videos from youtube, going to that site is probably safer than allnurses and amazon in regards to hackers, crackers, and viruses. Maybe not so much amazon but these messageboards such as allnurses do have exploits.
