Native American Reservation nursing

I was going to take a travel job working in Shiprock NM in Navajo Nation in the ED.....but i cancelled out...always wondered what it would have been like. I think it would be a very interesting assignment. Maybe I might re-consider someday. Would love to hear experiences of any nurses who have worked on the res...................

Used to work in Tuba City and also worked for an air ambulance company based out of there. Did quite a bit of transporting to and from Shiprock, but never actually worked there. Beautiful area.

And I loved working on the Navajo Reservation.

I worked in Chinle for about 6 months and really loved it. I love the Navajo people and the country is beautiful. I have only passed through Shiprock.

If you get the chance, you really should try it. It is really a neat experience to live and work on the Rez......you learn so much about another culture and it's a good place to have an 'out of USA' experience without actually leaving the US. I definitely recommend it.

I worked at USPHS Gallup Indian Medical Center which is in Navajo Nation for 3 months as a traveler in their outpatient OB Clinic and really loved it. The Navajos are great to work with and the jewelry, rugs and pottery are candy for the eyes. Zuni is gorgeous too.

I am currently working on a research project on Native American culture. I am soon to be a nurse and I am interested to know what you have learned, personally, about how to approach this culture and the important things we need to know as Nurses about the Native American culture? This is a hard subject to find people that have actually experienced meeting and treating the culture.

I am actively working on the Rez now and I love it. My children are learning another language. The scenery is beautiful and the sandstorms are definitely different. I think yoiu should try it.

I'm interested in where you are working currently with your family. I would love to do a rotation or maybe work permanently on a reservation or for IHS; but have serious concerns about how my family would adjust. How rural are you? What were some of the major adjustments you and your family made? Challenges?

I would appreciate any thoughts you have to share for someone with three young children (under 12).

I just passed my NCLEX and am looking for a nursing job on an Indian reservation, but can't really find any contact information...also wondering if you live on the reservation while you work there? any information regarding this would be great, because ill be moving from ohio across country and just want some advice...

Hello, I'm just a nursing student so I don't know anything on the clinical side but I'm Native American. I think the most important thing to know when working in the Native community is it's important to learn a bit about the local cultures i.e. taboos and such. Even learning bit of the language will be appreciated especially by elders.

Any mental health services there? I'm looking for psych NP preceptors for backup.

Most nursing agencies pay for housing if you are a traveler working in IHS facilities. If you get hired by IHS I understand that some of the hospitals do provide housing for you.
