Nurses General Nursing

Published

I don't post much..I just read. I'm an LPN, just now a year in... I've been working at a LTC for three months now, got a good report from my DON. She resigned, we got a new one. A week into the new DON's administration she calls me into her office, never having even spoken to me before and tells me several things she's "heard" about me and complaints etc...i.e I'm too harsh with the CNAs (yes, I can be..I knew this already..workin on it) I'm not assertive enough (My confidence is low..also been working on that) She gave me a *week* to improve these things.

I busted my behind to work on them, was very good to the girls (great group of girls who I got along with splendidly actually)...so yesterday she calls me back in and tells me that I haven't improved enough in these areas and she's taking me off the schedule but I can work the rest of this month. I wasn't happy, I asked why she was firing me..she said that she would not tell me until Monday when she wrote it all out... It just all seems very strange. I'm a good nurse, I'm good to the residents..I've been *told* by other nurses this exact same thing and she sits there and tells me she hasn't heard one good thing about me and isn't tellingme on the day she lets me go WHY she's doing it...but then lets me stay PRN until I can find a new job. If I'm such a bad nurse...why keep me? *head spins*

Why would she do this? Is it because they're cutting back budget wise and don't want to be honest about it? Is she just crazy? She's done other things to other nurses that have been..allbeit odd. This is only my second job and never have gotten bad reviews..ever..ever ever.

i'm curious to know what happend today too.

i got sacked once like this. new DON comes in. im the day shift RN on the SNF unit. she asks me one day "would you like to switch shifts and go to evenings?" i say no and go on about my business. all the while she is buddy buddy, ya know. so she hires this nurse that has worked with her forever. chick was her ADON at another building. we had no openings on day shift so she starts on evenings. she tells anyone that will lissn that she is going to days "soon". me, like an idiot, didnt see it coming. i go to work one day and get fired for not charting in the nursing note that i had given a pt ativan for agitation. i had charted a whole page, signed the narc out on the mar, written the reason AND effect on the back of the mar and she sacks me because i didnt add it to my note too. i was totally blindsided.

lesson i learned is that anytime there is new management come in, your job is NOT safe i dont care how long you've been there or how good a job you do.

run, dont walk. sometimes it's just better to cut your ties. because if they want you gone, they WILL find a reason...even if they have to make one up. ie...these "rumors" she's heard.

but me, being the chit that i am, i would run to the attorneys office and have their butt. cuz im mean and vindictive like that, lol.

This is often the reason when there is no good reason. Most DONs bring in one or more of their cronies when they move from facility to facility, and they can't readily do this if their new facility is staffed to capacity.

I'm willing to bet some $$$ this is the case.

Any updates sparrowhawk?

Well..I was supposed to go and talk to the DON about her "reasons", so I called her yesterday morning to set up a time, cause I had to go get my check stub. Anyway she said any time that afternoon..so i get there..I can't find her..well turns out she'd been fired that day. Like in the last five hours since I'd called her.

So I went to the administrator (With whom I had had a good conversation with previously about just trying to understand what was going on) and she gave me my job back...I start again Thursday, another RN who is a doll is promoted to DON.

I cannot believe how amazingly it turned out! I didn't cause a big scene with the admin, just went with the flow and waited..I'm glad I did, I really love the facility.

SOrry it took so long to update ya'll..it was the holiday weekend and I hadn't gotten back to talking to them! THanks for your support!

ETA: I had spoken momentarily with the DON about whether I was fired, laid off or just pushed down to PRN...in front of the admin..at that point she said just pushed down to PRN...I'm glad it's all sorted out now.

Nice...we all know what goes around comes around...but we're often not around to see it.

It is lovely when we are, though!

It's so nice when good things happen to good people. Congrats sparrow!! Glad it all worked out. Sounds like the poison has been shipped out. Yeah!!
