Let me be clear: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so ****** OFF right now. There are literally thousands of new grads, like myself, who are struggling ALL OVER THE U.S. who can't find jobs for the life of them. This is absurd!!

I have applied to over 30 jobs and cannot get a single call back. I have spent numerous nights sobbing in my bed because I can't afford my loans starting in December and might have to consider filing bankruptcy. :crying2::bluecry1::crying2::bluecry1:

And now, to hear that a Florida congressman wants to "import" foreign nursing to "combat the current nursing shortage" is more than I can take (http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_2536.html). Are you serious? Pleas tell me you're JOKING!!!

Why did I foolishly even consider becoming a nurse in the first place (besides it being my childhood dream)? What a waste of time. :banghead:

You can get a forebearance or extension on your student loans.. don't add that to your worries! Just keep looking , thats all you can do right? Or in the meantime get a job not related to nursing and keep looking for a nursing position. The job market will open back.. I don't know when, but it will.

Hugss ...Just be patient..Its the economy ..but things willl start picking up soon..Keep applying and dont be too picky.. sometimes its better to actually go in person to drop off your resume as soon as u apply for the job online..dont give up!!!

I won't patronize you asking "have you applied/tried/talked to..."

BTDT, I was very, very lucky. I found a job as a new LPN in 2008, able to step into my RN position when I passed my boards this past January. I'm sorry it's been so rough.

I totally understand how you feel.

I am a new grad who just started my first RN job yesterday, after spending 6 months applying for RN jobs and going on interviews.

I almost lost my home due to my savings running out in May and I just started back working as of yesterday.

For the last 2 1/2 years, all we were told in nursing school is about the "shortage" and how we will walk right out of nursing school and land the RN job of our dreams.

Then reality hit.

I literally put out close to 100 applications, was granted 4 interviews before I landed the RN job I have now. I didnt give up, but I was really discourged. All I can say is not to give up and keep the faith. Hopefully, it will turn around soon.

As Mag said, you can get an extension on your student loans if need be. Please don't let that top off your pile of things to worry about. I am a fairly new grad and my loan payments kicked in, but I was stuck in a part time position. I was able to get mine extended until December very easily. I deal with Nelnet and was able to request the extension online. Hang in there and don't give up. I felt like you are feeling now, thankfully I did have a part time position- but that wasn't paying all of the bills. I was applying to every position out there for a couple of months and received no return calls, then finally I was able to be switched to a full time position at my current job which was the most ideal situation. Things will fall in to place, unfortunately they just take their sweet time doing so. Best of luck to you.

1) Don't give up

2) Get an extension of your student loans

3) Get a job working as a CNA for now

4) Job market will open up, it always has and will

5) When you get the call, don't be picky and take anything to get the experience

I was in the same boat last year when I graduated...I finally found a job that is about an hour away from my house. No one wants to hire a new grad because it takes a seasoned nurse off the floor to train the new one...It sucks...been there done that...I wish you all the best and keep applying...It will work out.

i understand your feelings , i am so sorry you can't find a job.. please don't give up. the ecomony will turn around and you will get a job. i think that congressman needs a quick kick in the britches...

I think it would be a better idea for each one of us who is not happy about this to write to our representatives in Congress.

Please understand I am not xenophobic but, after doing extensive research on this issue, I am convinced that the foreign nurses brought in by these facilities are pawns. The agencies don't give a rodent's posterior about the welfare of the nurses---they see them merely as sources of income for the agencies, the immigration lawyers and the administrators who salivate at the prospect of importing foreign nurses who will work for less money than Americans.

I also find it heinous that American attorneys, elected officials, and health care administrators have no qualms about contributing to the brain drain, exporting the most talented people from their own countries to come to work here. Many of the countries (and yes, the Philippines is an exception) have their own nursing shortages and we're just making conditions worse.

I am also angered at the way some of the proponents of nurse importation put down American nursing programs. Yes! Changes need to be made! We are doing something WRONG if new nurses are uniformly ill-prepared to assume clinical responsibilities upon graduation. We are doing something WRONG if new nurses quit the profession within their first two years because of the stress. We are doing something WRONG if new nurses cannot find employment and employers hesitate to hire new grads. Nursing education needs to be changed----NOT OUTSOURCED. :angryfire
