Also how do you think the public views male nurses? Might sound like a stupid question but I'm not in the field so I have no clue.

I view all nurses as a professional, male or female. I have been a patient and had both and I was fortunate to excellent care by both.

l think there is a varied response. All in all, seems pretty indifferent, but some of the older generation who were used to nurses in caps and panty hose and Dr.'s who were always male and considered god-like still may not quite get it. Alot of them think if you are male and in a scrub, you are a Dr.....that makes me crazy!....anyway, your question was how do YOU GUYS feel about nursing?...so do you mean all of us nurses, or all of the nurses that are guys?...l'm not a guy, but, doesn't matter to me as long as he is capable, respectful and ambitious...ie:not lazy. same requirements for the females too.........LR
Not just the men. Everyone. I fixed the topic.

No probs with them. Most patients I have (I'm in OB) are so thrilled to see a "male nurse" working there that it's a bit funny.
So there's no animosity between male and female nurses?

No animosity that I know of, however as some of the male posters here have pointed out, they don't always get the same treatment from their nurse peers and have been victims of gender based discrimination in one form or another.
You may want to do a search of previous forums - this topic has been discussed MANY times here.

Like I said, I work OB so males are such a rarity that people seem excited to see them. Many nurses also say that nursing needs men to save it and they are less catty and gossipy. I don't believe that for a second, but in my experience a male nurse can be just as good and professional as a female nurse. It's all about you as an individual. If you are a good nurse, no one I work with would have a problem with you.
That said, there are some male OB nurses on the board who have been tested at every new job and felt they had to earn everyone's respect before being treated as an equal. But, I think I've had to do the same thing;)

a nurse is a nurse is a nurse!! men can get a raw deal somtimes- sometimes the older women dont like being cared for by young men.......but worked with a guy who looked like a male model once...and the women would be sure and be looking their best when he come on duty(it was a gynae ward) I think the patients knew his shift pattern better than he did! he now workes in special care baby unit.........and is brilliant! so male nurses- great, just wish there more of them!

there are SO Many threads regarding males in nursing and related topics. Check em out. I say, personally, if the person is competent, caring, hard-working and has integrity I don't care the gender, sexual preference, age, or religious/nonreligious affiliation of said nurse. Why should it matter?
