Interview/Resume Review service

I am a Director of Nursing in LTC. I have been hiring staff for 15 years or so in various roles. It is appalling to me at times the types of applications/resumes I receive. I have been shocked during many interviews as well. Even tho I feel very confident being the interviewer, I detest being the interviewee - seems I always stumble over the hard questions and wish I had someone to practice with. We all know from reading this forum that jobs are very competitive in the nursing market as well as all other careers.

I am thinking of starting a local side business and I want your opinions.

What if I had people email me their resume. I read it over and then call them to meet me in a public place for a mock interview (somewhere like a starbucks). After the mock interview meeting was over I would email them a summary of my opinions on their current resume and interview skills and offer them tips to make them more marketable (ie: spit out the gum, don't wear holey jeans, cover up that awful tattoo, sit up straight, etc). For those of you involved in the hiring process, isn't it amazing what some people think are acceptable behavior during a job interview? Don't they get that there are at least 3-4 others wanting the same position?

For all of you new grads out there that can't find a job, is this a service that you could see yourself using. What would you pay for a service like this?

Anyone else with opinions - what would help it succeed, how much to charge, is it even a worthwhile idea?

Thanks. Just trying to make an extra buck to put my kid thru college soon. :)

I think it is an excellent idea. One thing you may want to consider is the fact that you wouldn't be able to charge too much since a large percentage of your clientele would likely be unemployed. You should definitely do an in depth analysis to see what you would have to charge to be successful. Fortunately, it sounds like your overhead would consist mainly of your time.

If you decide to pursue this, would you be willing to assist people in mock interviews via web conference if they were not local? That would greatly expand your market. Plus, I would be able to partake! :D

I have a few years before I get to that point, but I will definitely be interested when I do!

Good luck with this

haha...you give me a chuckle. See, my point of doing this is to develop a business and make extra money. Seriously, how much would you be willing to pay me for a service like this if I lived in your neighborhood?

Like JWalk85 stated, you wouldn't want to charge too much to new grads since most of us are unemployed. If I lived in your neighborhood, I would be willing to pay $40 for an in depth resume and interview critique. Just my 2 cents :)

I'd be willing to pay around $40-$50 as well.

It sounds like a great idea to me! A nurse faxed a resume to our office last week and I counted 5 typos. Needless to say, it went right to the shredder box.

Nascar nurse

I pay nothing :)

there is many site for resume criticism and your business it's not first:)

I ll found someone who help me seriously,

But, at first time wouldn't you tray it free? for your business experience?:D

Thank you

thank you for supporting :)

malikalom,

You are just too much. You are are at a great disadvantage. Here you are posting on a thread in which someone with great experience is discussing a new business venture. You ask for help, because it is obvious that you are in need of it, but then insult the original poster by telling her that she has nothing to offer you that you could not get for free elsewhere.

This is free advice frome me: Change your attitude, or you will get absolutely nowhere.

Amazing how many will ask for pro bono work when they need the most assistance. While I can understand offering a reduced fee to new graduates, I don't see the necessity of an experienced nurse manager offering free resume critique to "get her business started", I believe the whole point in this venture is that she already has the experience and is offering her proven professional assistance and opinion to those who may need it. Clearly the "free" online resume reviews may not be nearly as useful and in depth as the potential service to be offered by NascarNurse. In other words you get what you pay for.

NascarNurse,

Would you also be willing to do resume critique's for those NOT in your area for a fee? Say $20 for a comprehensive resume review with recommendations. I think $40-50 for a new grad would be fair. A more extensive background (say someone who worked in a job for 10+ years and was downsized, affected by a RIF (reduction in force), closed facility) nurse who hasn't had to interview or create a resume in years may need more assistance.

As far as those who have difficulty with English, there are many organizations that offer free English classes perhaps that would be a better place to start.

Thanks to all. I appreciate all of your advice and opinions (even the negative ones :)).

I never really anticipated just doing this exclusively for nurses. My thoughts were an interview is an interview. It's all about first impressions, from the resume that gets you in the door to the interview and how you conduct yourself. I am throwing the idea out on the nursing forum because I figure if even nurses are having so much trouble getting a job then the whole world must be suffering (which we know to be true).

I also never really anticipated doing it as an on-line consulting type business, although that may be a great idea. Will have to think more about that one!

I'm also surprised that so many of you are stating around $40/$50. I was thinking $25 or $30. Maybe I was gonna sell myself short.
