Interesting situation in my interview for a job...

I went to a second interview for a job the other day, which was with the unit manager. My first interview had been with the HR lady who was very professional.

This interview was for a LTC position in a memory unit, part time, nights.

I did get the job, but this manager woman who will now be my boss was completely unprofessional in the interview. This facility is really nice, but she had me sit there while she powered on her computer(that had shut down on its own while she was printing something) so that she would be able to look at my application the HR lady had forwarded to her. She answered four e-mails on her computer while I sat there and she also texted on her phone. Two different people from out in the hall interrupted the interview by bringing something in to her office(batteries and a lamp). And any time someone passed by the door, she flagged them down and told them something about how she wanted them to end this meeting at the end of their shift. On our tour of the unit, she also grabbed a cleaning bottle and rag off of the custodians cart so she could go clean "fingerprints" off of her office door that were driving her mad. She said if she didn't get them at that moment that it was going to drive her crazy. She had me stand in the other hallway while she went to do that, halfway through the tour. She did not seem focused on me at all, which really turned me off. She was very concerned that I had had only one year of experience under my belt, and when she asked me how long I had had my license and how long I been working she kept getting the numbers confused and had to keep asking me to repeat myself due to the fact that she wasn't listening to me answer the questions that SHE asked me in the first place. :mad: I walked out of there sure that I didn't get the job, which was ok with me because if she didn't like my one year of experience then I could understand that, things happen. I would just keep looking. But the job was offered to me.

I hope this is not normal, and is not a reflection of how she will be as a boss. Is this normal?? Anyone have any advice?? Thankfully I will be working nights and may not have to deal with her that often..

To be honest I wouldn't work there. I'm sure that you showed up and behaved in a way that was the best you can be. That's what people do at interviews. I'm sure she was probably on her best behavior since an interview is a two way street. If she acts that way when trying to entice you to work there I'm sure she won't be a pleasure to work for. I interviewed two years ago at a large hospital with a great reputation and was literally screamed at and degraded and was then offered the job. I didn't take it because if she's that unprofessional in an interview she'd be probably 10x worse to work for. But that's just my 2 cents.

Wow. That's bizarre. I am part of the interviewing process at my place of employment & I would never act like that! Usually both ends are on their best behavior for interviews, so if that's her "best behavior", I'm worried about how she is the rest of the time! Whether or not you take the job is up to you, but I'm not so sure I'd be on board with that...

Were you allowed the opportunity to meet with the nurses who are currently employed there and ask them how they feel about their positions? Did you ask what the turn-over rate is?

Whatever decision you make is the right one for you right now. Worst case scenario, you don't like it and end up job-hunting again in the near future. Best of luck to you!!

Many years ago, I went to a job interview and the DON who interviewed me was hostile and unfriendly towards me.

I left the interview thinking "Good grief what happened?":confused:

Later she called me back and said "you got the job."

I took the job and she acted friendly towards me. I don't know what happened the day of that interview.

I guess she was having a "really really bad day" that had nothing to do with me.

I had a similar experience. however, it wasn't in the healthcare profession. I honestly think she was trying to show you "who's the boss." I had an interview once and I was on my best behavior but the manager wasn't. He was texting on his phone, on the computer (checking emails), and at one point he wasn't even facing me during the interview. I was so uncomfortable and I honestly thought I didn't get the job. But i ended up getting the job and I accepted it. On my first day I quickly realized that all the employees hated my boss and I grew to dislike him too. Apparently I wasn't the only one he did that to because my co-workers told me that he did it to them too. So, try not to take it personally but this behavior does reflect how the person is as a boss. In other words they have "I'm the boss and you have to suck it up" type of attitude.

You don't want to work for someone like that...you got a good read on her. I have interviewed a few times during my short time in nursing and have met people that turned me off right away (like that lady) and others that were so warm and inviting I wanted to move in with them (not really, but you get my point). If you desperately need this job, take it and see what happens. If you can wait and see what else pans out, I would seriously recommend doing so.

Her baseline is probably scattered and dis tractable.

However she may still be a good clinician and manager, just quirky. Did she seem otherwise friendly & supportive? Was wad the tone of the unit?

Only you can decide if you will fit in that environment or not.
