I have lurked on these message boards for a tad too long. i joined to add my voice.

You can imagine my utter surprise when i see a sudden sprouting of posts claiming that the root cause of the registered nursing problem is immigrants.

i took my undergrad/graduate level studies in the united states and i would constantly be told to 'go back where you came from, there are no jobs for you'

Do nurses think they are special? there are thousands of people immigrating in all the healthcare fields daily.

Immigration is a worldwide phenomenon.

the united states in not special. if they are to compete in the world economy (not that they are doing a great job of that anyway) they have to let a certain number of skilled workers migrate.

open your eyes.

these are not illegal immigrants jumping fences near texas.

these are skilled individuals with a bachelors degree/or higher in the same field that you are getting associates degrees in.

Education always wins.

raise you entry point to a BSN and then you can complain about people taking your jobs,

I still love your beautiful country and i cannot wait to visit on vacation,

Wow. I haven't seen any of the posts you mention, and you have every right to be upset. Some of the best, hardest working, most honest and conscientious nurses I've ever seen were immigrants.

Whenever I hear people slamming immigrants, I'm reminded of comedian Pat Paulsen who "ran" for president in the mid 1970's. His main answer to pretty much everything was "I believe all of Americas current problems can be blamed on the lax immigration policies of the Native Americans." Really puts it in perspective.

If anybody complains about immigrants not speaking the language, I ask them how well they speak Navajo, Sioux, Penobscott, etc.

Hope you'll forgive the asterisks in America and find the country as a whole to be good.

I see this thread being closed soon.....

I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience.

North Carolina is a great state to visit. We have great weather, gorgeous mountains and a beautiful coast. Any vacation here would be great. :)

the USA is special, that is why people want to come here.

how can we when we keep sending the jobs overseas and importing worker's who will send the money overseas?

raise you entry point to a bsn and then you can complain about people taking your jobs,

good point.

this is a hot topic, but to the poster who would question us about our ability to speak a foreign language, i think many people would learn the language of whatever country they are immigrating to.

I see threads of this naure all the time on these boards... Weather they complain about other cultures, complain about speaking other languages.. Or not being able to understand others accents, and feeling entitled and that other people should change... Lots of ignorance and covert racism.

Thank you for your post

Ignorance = fluent at talking nonsense. Those who judge people by their nationality have never been to another country or have never read a book in their life. Is it so hard to see people as human beings ? Blood doesn't have a nationality. Can't stress this enough: All people living in USA are freaking immigrants, some are old and some are new immigrants. Just bc you were born in USA it doesn't change the fact that you are Italian, French, Irish, Indian etc. Your race, blood type, etc doesn't change. The true Americans are the American Indians :)

the USA is special, that is why people want to come here.

Yes I agree, it is special. But do you know who made it special? Your great great great great great great grandparents or other people's grandparents . Can't erase history :)

the USA is special, that is why people want to come here.

yes it is special but....

thats not what makes it special buddy, Canada Australia UK and most of western Europe all have a huge immigrant population. people dont necessarily want to migrate to the USA just want to migrate to a better economy, a better chance, to a better life.....

I think I caused a misunderstanding. I mentioned the language thing in defense of immigrants. I dislike the idea of an official language. It's variety that makes us strong as a people and a nation.

hmmmm like another poster said i too haven't seen a slew of people claiming immigration is the "root" cause of the rn problem. i call bullhockey on your 'root cause' inflammatory claim. no one here says that's the nursing problem's root cause.

many in the us are for very tight controls on immigration. we were welcoming of all poor and down trodden for many years but the us started clamping our boarders down when people started flying planes into buildings killing thousands of our citizens.

also you state "i took my undergrad/graduate level studies in the united states and i would constantly be told to 'go back where you came from, there are no jobs for you' then you contradict yourself an by stating the opposite in saying you were utterly surprised to learn on an many in the us are all for clamping down on immigration.

and to this inflammatory claim "raise you entry point to a bsn and then you can complain about people taking your jobs" ummm many filipino nurses i've known constantly boasted that the bsn is mandatory for their education yet their nursing education is vastly inferior to any the us ad or bsn education and training. we aren't crying for uk or filipino bsn because we think they are better educated and trained. they aren't.

btw i too have a bsn and a secondary bs degree.

I agree but then that can be said about all countries that took over an aboriginal people. Most countries were taken over from the original inhabitants.

Also I haven't seen the posts OP is complaining about either. lol @ Pat Paulsen comment. I forgot about him and the Smother's Brothers. ;-)
