Immigrant Nurses

Published

I have lurked on these message boards for a tad too long. i joined to add my voice.

You can imagine my utter surprise when i see a sudden sprouting of posts claiming that the root cause of the registered nursing problem is immigrants.

i took my undergrad/graduate level studies in the united states and i would constantly be told to 'go back where you came from, there are no jobs for you'

Do nurses think they are special? there are thousands of people immigrating in all the healthcare fields daily.

Immigration is a worldwide phenomenon.

the united states in not special. if they are to compete in the world economy (not that they are doing a great job of that anyway) they have to let a certain number of skilled workers migrate.

open your eyes.

these are not illegal immigrants jumping fences near texas.

these are skilled individuals with a bachelors degree/or higher in the same field that you are getting associates degrees in.

Education always wins.

raise you entry point to a BSN and then you can complain about people taking your jobs,

I still love your beautiful country and i cannot wait to visit on vacation,

Can't stress this enough: All people living in USA are freaking immigrants, some are old and some are new immigrants.

Patently untrue. Descendants of immigrants, perhaps (or perhaps not...), but 100% not a factually correct statement. No matter how you stress it.

I think the gist of the OP post was:

1. Don't demonize immigrant nurses and blame them for the standard of nursing practice as they are only trying to make a better life for themselves.

2. Not all immigrants are illegal and cannot speak english. most are highly educated.

Personally, i think there is a thin line between opinion and insult as far as some of the posts on immigration i have read.

one word... WOW!!! such hatred for different cultures (some posts not all)

the sad truth is even if ALL immigrant nurses were to go to their home countries RIGHT NOW. there would still be extensive problems with the Nursing Profession in this country.....

That's not what OP said. And it is interesting that NEWBIE nurses take so much offense to what we older ones have fought so hard to maintain. Seasoned nurses who lived through the mass importation of RN's during the 1980'S then again in the 1990's know how quickly our wages, demand, status and patient care can drop when the government goes back to the old importation of RN's.

WE older nurses fight to protect our hard won turf. The US nurses don't 'blame' the state of nursing in the US on immigrants. Far from it! In fact the reason nurses want to come here is because US nurses fought hard to stay in demand and to keep our wages at close to the the highest in the world. Do you realize how bad conditions and wages are for nurses in many other countries?

WE FIGHT EVERYDAY TO MAINTAIN THAT HIGH WAGE AND RESPECT FOR US NURSES. YOU NEWBIES HAVE BENEFITED GREATLY FROM THE STATUS AND WAGES WE FOUGHT AND FIGHT TO MAINTAIN. I promise you it can all be gone tomorrow when they lift visa restrictions. The US hospitals got the government to do it twice before. Importation of nurses hurts US nurses plain and simple!

even NEWBIES have a right to an opinion.

(why does it feel like i've said a dirty word...newbie...lol)

the USA is special, that is why people want to come here.

the USA is 'Speshul' which is why a lot of people don't want to go there ...

to the objective observer the USA has turned itself into a third world state.

Were you told a lot of stories as a child where the boogie-man was Uncle Sam? You are consistently hostile and many times inaccurately prejudicial about the United States in most of your posts. We won't make you move here, I promise!

another 'merkin who has fallen in the sarchasm ...

given the level of hostility towards anything to do with 'Socialised Healthcare' and the baseless belief that the USA is better accepted as the norm on here ....

You'll forgive my not quoting the misogynist quip - I hadn't realized that was part of your worldview, but anyway I love socialized medicine! I would like nothing more than to have a single-payer system with an extra layer of upper-crust private pay providers for those who can afford it.

The problem is we have a Frankenstein-like monstrosity that is almost impossible to undo. I don't think you understand that, but neither does anyone else (including those charged with voting on these things) so if you choose to feel it's just another insult from the Ugly Americana it will be due to your willful misinterpretation.

Boiling it down to NHS vs what we have is simplistic. There are lots of frameworks for healthcare reform other than yours.

I've got lots of friends who live there and many online via Twitter, and many here on allnurses. They can talk about an issue without trying to hint we are stupid, and make comments about "third world countries" which by the way is a term of institutional bias.

misogynist ? i didn't realise all American's were humourless females who wore pubic wigs ... you really have fallen into the Sarchasm haven't you

'merkin' in reference to Americans is based on the trait that many Americans seem incapable of pronouncing words like American and Nuclear properly ...

Well at least you focussed on the most rlelevant points -- I assumed you meant the word as spelled when you were really making fun of the speech of of those who live in the Southern states? In other words I assumed you were more intelligent than you are and you assumed I was dumber than I am--- or I should've immediately realized "merkin" meant "American"? Wow. I will bow out now. Your bitterness runs very deep.

Here is how it works:

The citizens of each country need to work on making their own country good and not think that the United States is always going to be there for them. We can't be here for you. Yes we really are pretty much tired of the spoiled teenager attitude of those around the world after helping them for so many decades. Our people have fought hard and worked hard for what we have here. People of other countries around the world need to do the same and not throw in the towel when things are not working at home.

People who have come here, become citizens and have assimilated into our culture and have pride in being Americans are welcome (this does not mean forgetting your ethnic heritage) but it does mean making a commitment. People who come singly and were not actually "ordered" on the internet by big healthcare to come here for nursing jobs are welcomed. We want you to apply to a job and sit and wait in line to get an interview just like us.

The United States like all other countries, can open and close itself to changes in work staff needs. Yes that door is one that we can slam shut at anytime we want. Unfortunately like in all other countries, we too have big business people who want the cheapest most pliable workstaff that can be found often in nursing. Not all areas experience this, but for those who have witnessed this it is shocking. Often big business in healthcare will choose one or two countries where importing nurses en mass is really cheap. They will go online and actually order sight unseen. What you must understand is that this is not in any way a preference based on excellence, you need to know that it is exactly opposite. You are not being brought over because of your education and abilities. It actually is a form of racism of the worst kind that has been revised and somehow become legal again...

Healthcare in the United States is failing. Big business is only in it for the money - always has been, but now it's nearly all-in. It is much easier to hire foreign workers who come from countries that have nothing. Holding feet to fire is not even necessary. Easy to manipulate people who must send money home. Easy to manipulate people of countries who were raised from childhood to think that they will have a job waiting for them here in the US as a nurse. It is a corporate born Class System. There are countries where people are like a crop to be bought and sold.

No jobs in your country? Well the economy is bad everywhere. Your country is in turmoil? Well, you are gonna have to think about working that out. Bloody to do that? Sure is. But look, it's what you will have to do. Our ancestors did as well. Your future generations will appreciate that you have actually contributed and not run away to the United States.

Remember this, you will not be welcome if you come here only to work and bad-mouth the United States.

Wow descendants of immigrants, what a big difference lol
