OK, it's getting bad. I'm watching 48 hrs. They show a close up of the detective writing a note on his pad. My first thought? 'What a nice vein!'. I could get an 18 gauge in that one, no prob.

I once read something titled "you might be an emergency nurse if..." One of them was "if you study the veins of the other people in line checking out at the grocery store." It might be a bit creepy, but I do it!

Me too! I fiddle with my husband's wrist and arm veins absentmindedly until he gets irritated and tells me to quit.

Me, too. Most of the time he just says, "No!"

I was giving report to a nurse who suddenly grabbed my hand, held it up for closer inspection, and said, "Man, I'd LOVE to put an IV into YOU!" I knew her very well or might have thought that strange (it was early in my career; now that would not seem strange at all as I ask virtual strangers if they have been checked out for pinkeye or apnea on a regular basis).

It is really bad when you start saying or think, "I could get a 14 ga. in that one with my eyes closed, in the dark, blindfolded, behind my back, with my left hand, from across the street." That will make people look at you in an entirely different way... possibly not a good thing. ;)

I have had multiple patients tell me (especially the difficult sticks) how much we sound like vampires during IV insertion... "Dang! It's not gonna stay, but it'll give me the blood that I need" "Hey, Jean! Look at this nice, juicy one!" "This... thiiiiiiis is the one (licking chomps)"

Yes I have thought that before. I have actually described a pt like that to a coworker before.

My husbands best friend, a well-built young man with multiple veins that I have eyed ever since knowing him, got into a motorcycle accident last year. After his release, during our first visit, and after our cordial "how are you feeling?" greetings I asked him "when you woke up, how many IV's did you have in you?"

He said he couldn't remember, but he thought 3 or 4. He said it's when he realized he was in pretty bad shape, seeing all those IV's. I said "nah, they just did that cause they could.... they were probably making some kind of game out of it. Who can get the biggest gauge IV in..."

Yep me too! I notice veins on all the docs, nurses, and all the people on tv lol
