Nurses General Nursing

I am feeling pretty negative about nursing and could use a "pick-me-up" or maybe a reminder why I became a nurse to begin with. For the life of me I can't remember. :o It just seems every time I come home from work, I don't have the warm fuzzies any more.

So, if you are so inclined.....fill in the blank.

I love being a nurse because nothing means more to me than that happy look a patient will get when I take the time to explain the meaning of a lab value, or purpose of a test, etc. to him that he really wants to know and that will put his nerves at ease.

You don't sit at a desk all day, your body isn't meant to sit for 8 hours straight, you can look at your life when you are 80 and feel like when you leave this world you have made a difference in many lives, if you get burned out you can switch it up, you have a talent with people, just remember if it was easy everyone would do it.

Because I get the satisfaction of making a difference in someone's life, either helping to ease their pain, making them more comfortable, or just being there to hold their hand and easing their minds. It is what I love the most....a simple thank you from my patients, whether it be by words, a look, or a smile.

Specializes in ICU/CCU/MICU/SICU/CTICU.

I love being a nurse because........... I have the chance to do a variety of specialties, I have job security no matter what state I go to, I am constantly learning new things.............

I love being a nurse because....... I can help control a dying patients pain, I can lend a shoulder to cry on to a family who are losing a loved one, I can see a wound that has been present for 2 yrs heal because of something that I have tried different, I can help a patient understand their medications, and I can see a smile on a patients face......... :)

I've saved lives!!! :Melody:

Of all the things I've ever done in my life, nothing else gives me such a rush as a successful Code.

Specializes in Critical Care/ICU.

I LOVE being a nurse because of the 42 year old woman who walked up to me as I walked down a hall in my hospital one day (off duty, in my regular street clothes) and said "begalli?" and as I looked at her suspiciously, I said "yes?" she said, "you don't remember me do you?" I said "sorry, no."

She went on to remind me that I was the nurse who recovered her from anesthesia and extubated her and then the next day transferred her out of our unit after having a mitral valve replacement.

She was gushing that she couldn't thank me enough for my professionalism and understanding during a terrible time in her life. Her husband left her when she became ill and she was an athlete who thought her life was over, done. I recalled as she described the situation more and more. We did a lot of talking, her and I, during her stay in the ICU.

She rode her bicycle to the hospital that day for a check-up. SHe looked great and reported feeling the best she has ever felt in her life.

This happened only 6 months after I got my license and was working on my own in the ICU. This is what I was waiting for.

So every single box of candy, pizza, and thank you card since then reminds me of this special patient who helped me realize what it was I was really doing.

I also LOVE being a nurse because I get to use my smarts, play with highly technical equipment, and manipulate life itself. How freaky is that?!?

I get to learn from some of the best in the world and pass on what I learn by enjoying the presence of bright-eyed new grads and students who have an insatiable curiosity. They help me realize that I really DO know what I'm doing and I am such a necessary part of their future nurseness!

I've saved lives!!! :Melody:

This is soooooo true and also we have the profound privilege of being present during death and having an impact on the dignity of the end of a individual's life.

ok this is from the patients perspective ... I love having a nurse look after me because when they have it they take the time to talk with you, or explain something to you. This then makes you feel great because someone you do not know is taking time to show a sinsere intrest in what you think or imforming you about what is going on or making you feel better. for instance once i was 5 and i was in the hospital after surgery. I needed a blood test and i was not going to let the tech anywhere near me. my nurse told me that she had needed a blood test just the day before and had this tech draw her blood because he was so good. I trusted her and allowed him to take my blood.
