I had never heard of anyone trying to consume alcohol by way of an enema, till i read this story:

I'm sorry, Marie, I started laughing and couldn't stop. Then looking back at some of the things bizarre things I have witnessed I could understand. Reminded me of a patient I had who had cellulitis in her temperal area from shooting up. Yes, if you've been in nursing long you will have seen it all.

it almost makes me wonder if the husband requested it; already an alcoholic and was unable to swallow. the wife is far from guilty but i don't think the intent was murder.
and yes, the rectal vault can absorb mostly anything given po as it's the mucosa lining of the lg intestine that would absorb it.
nevertheless, still mind-boggling and totally despicable.

I live in Lake Jackson and the article was right across the front page this morning. Everyone was talking about it at work. Everyone knows somebody that knows somebody that know this lady that gave the emema. You know how that goes. I cannot believe anyone would do something so stupid - it's crazy!

how in the world could anyone absorb that much fluid? Wonder how many times she had to do it and over what period of time to get it all in.
That is what the colon is for. Depending on how dehydrated you are, it can be very fast.

i remember my mom telling me years ago that alcoholics used to do this, so that others couldn't smell the booze on their breath.
so, as long as you don't pass gas no one will suspect, huh?

This story is sad. If the person who received this enema was an achoholic, it amazes me how addicting that is, and the lengths someone goes to, to feed feed that addiction. And not anywhere near anything to laugh or joke about, but that's just me.
Marie: My apologies please. I did't know what you were saying was real. It was just so unbelievable, but I read the thread where she was arrested. I just can't believe it. I've had patients in hepatic failure and it is a horrible sight. I know if I was an alcoholic and saw what happens to you when you are dying from alcoholism it would make a believer out of me. I know alcholics will do some pretty desperate things, like drinking sterno and stuff like that, but this is really unbelielable.
As someone posted above, there had to be consent on the part of the person on the receiving end. It just makes me shudder.
I wouldn't have posted it in the General Nursing forum if it was fake.
I asked one of the general surgeons today about this. He said he wouldn't call it common, but he's heard of a few cases of people doing this.
