How Does Soda Dehydrate the Body?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was speaking to a nurse whose brother had a 'borderline' creatinine level. Her brother told her that the nurse told him that he drinks alot of soda, and that probably dehydrated him slightly. We were trying to debate this, and from my deduction, it may be that his sugar was elevated.

Anyone have an answer to this? Thanks!

I found the old email . . . and a lot of other urban legends. This is fun.

If that were the case, wouldn't you also see that effect with juices? A carb is a carb.

I agree . . .and what about milk?

Well, not the idea that elevated glucose can be dehydrating.

No, but that would be more likely be an effect of uncontrolled diabetes than soda consumption, correct?

I'd think so...

My mom thought sodas were evil, convinced they were going to rot out my kidneys. She would fuss at me every time I'd drink one, and was quite put out at my doc for not telling me to stay away from them :)

My grandma was addicted to Pepsi! I've never been much of a soda drinker, just every now and then as a treat.

Just check out the sodium levels in sodas, they are insane! This could be a contributing factor to the dehydration thing. If I remember right, diet sodas had more sodium in most cases.

How about all the sodium?
