I am a nurse and now I have MRSA.:(

Specializes in Thoracic Cardiovasc ICU Med-Surg.

It's ok. EVERY NURSE you probably know, including me, surely has it too.

I did a research project years and years ago about MRSA. If I remember right about 70% of the general population has it.

According to the CDC, 25-30% of the population are colonized with staph, only 2% are colonized with MRSA. The last study I read, I believe was 4-5% of healthcare workers are colonized. I always hear nurses saying that we all are colonized, but not true at all. Thank goodness!

Specializes in LTC, assisted living, med-surg, psych.

I've had three episodes of MRSA cellulitis. It's not fun, but you get treated when symptoms first appear, and life goes on. I did get C.diff after the last go-round (six weeks of ABX will do that sometimes). Otherwise, I rarely think about it even though I know I'm colonized......I'm just careful about hand hygiene and gloving properly, and I try to keep my immune system up to snuff with daily vitamins.

Specializes in Med Surg - Renal.

All I got was a $5 cafeteria voucher.

Specializes in Certified Med/Surg tele, and other stuff.

The upswing is, you always get your own private room!

ITA with the others. I'm sure we all would test positive.

I refuse to have swabs taken to confirm MRSA. Just give me Bacitracin and call it a day.

Specializes in Cath lab, acute, community.

When studying nursing at uni we did a test in science class. We all swabbed our buttocks, nares and underarms, and then they were cultured. A good 7-8/10 of us had MRSA! Makes me wonder what percentage of susceptible patients get MRSA from health care providers!

Specializes in Oncology.

Last time I was in the hospital I thought about telling them I have MRSA to get a private room, but I figured it would back fire and I'd end up with some old lady who keeps the TV on full blast 24/7 and had a massive MRSA filled wound, complete with wound Vac.
