I am so excited I almost couldn't fall asleep after my shift last evening. I finally got a job at my local hospital after spending 9 months in a LTC facility with Rehab!! I have definatley paid my dues and learned a lot at the LTC, but this was not the kind of nursing I envisioned for myself. The patients were great, but the amount of them were crazy and the paperwork was insane. So much work....wayyy too little staff. I love my coworkers, but it is time to move on to what I was actually trained to do. Thanks for letting me gush my excitement. Hold out hope new grads. You may have to put your dues in somewhere else, but eventually you will get the job you were wanting if you stick with it and make the best out of what you have.:D

Congrats!!! I have recently applied to a LTC facility but I think I might remove my application. I hated it during clinical, but right now I am kind of willing to take anything.

Hi,

Wow I am so happy to hear this and at this point I hope to even get employment at a LTC here in NJ.

I just got on this forum and site and I must say that I am in the same boat as everyone else but my situation is kind of drastic in that my loan payments are right around the corner and can't afford to move back home with my parents and out of my apartment. I am disheartened but am trying to keep hope alive. There are times that I wish I can move back home with my parents but the situation there is the reason that I presently live alone. At the moment I have applied to not only hospitals but agencies as well and so far things are slow but I am hoping that things will turn up. I am even applying to hospitals for unit clerk/secretary positions and just anything to be able to pay the bills. I am licensed in NJ and am working on getting licensed in NY (still have to take the child abuse course and pay for verification) so I am definitely putting in the work but I'm just so nervous as what tomorrow will bring. If anyone has anymore ideas this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you everyone. I am so excited! When I got out of school last year there was NOTHING for new grads. No graduate nurse programs and most of the hospitals were on a hiring freeze. I broadened my search and got a job at a LTC facility. It is very different from what I was trained to do, but it taught me a lot about organization and prioritization and for that I am very grateful. I have had to make due with what we had and work within the limitations of not having pharmacy, radiology, wound care and respiratory therapy on site, so I think that I have become more creative and learned more on how to plan ahead and make things work. I can't wait to get into the hospital where there are respiratory techs, wound care specialists and code teams available to you. Not to mention that the PCTs in the hospital do all of your accuchecks and you just have to cover those that are high or treat those that are low. Our CNAs at the LTC facility only were able to do the ACLs and vital signs, so the nurses did everything else. When I was the only RN in the facility....I WAS THE CODE TEAM!! A little scary for a new grad especially when it does happen a couple of times a month since we have a rehab side to the facility where folks are just a couple of days post op from everything from knees to open heart surgery. I think that I will feel a lot more comfortable in a hospital where you have so many more resourses.

Congratulations. I'm glad to hear that your persistence has paid off.
