Blood transfusions??? just say no...
Wow, this topic really stirred people up. I wonder why so many became so defensive? The original post was merely a request for information and guidance. Let us all remember that we are here to help one another, not berate and become defensive with each other over differences. So to answer your question... like another post said, maybe you should look into home health or positions outside acute care. If you want to work in a hospital, there are bloodless programs/units and they are becoming more prevalent. Also, maybe perioperative nursing. Another note...many are saying that we would do our patients a disservice by refusing to transfuse them. Keep in mind that bloodless programs are becoming more prevalent not only because of religious views, but because it's good medicine. Check out the website http://www.noblood.org or do a google search. Good Luck!

Working for Metropolitan Jewish Health System
Hi LovelRN, A Home Care Planner usually works in a hospital setting working with pt's who've been recommended for home care by their MD's. We interview the pt and assess them for home care. Based on that assessment, we develop a basic plan of care according to their needs (ex: pt needs RN 2x/week for meds teaching or wound care, PT/OT, home health aide daily, etc...). A Home care RN goes out into the field and visits pt's homes to further assess the pt and their living conditions and delivers the care for the pt (ex: teaching, wound care, IV therapy...). The Home Care RN would also make other recommendations based on his/her assessment (home health aide, safety features for the home, etc.) Good luck!

New grad needs a job badly!!!
I went to an MJHS open house. Speaking to them in person made all the difference; I applied online too and never received a response. If you already applied online, go to one of their open interview days (they are listed on their website). Dress well and be enthusiastic about nursing and your goals. If u speak a second language that is a huge plus. Good luck!

Working for Metropolitan Jewish Health System
They will hire new grads if they feel you are a good fit for the position. I'm a new graduate and after searching for almost a year, I went to an open house and was offered the two positions I mentioned in the post above. I had previously applied online and never received a call. I believe they hold open interviews once a week or so. Fill out an online application and go in person on an open interview day. Dress well and be ready to shine. They really respond well to nurses who are passionate about their work and have other skills to offer (I have a background in office management and sales). Speaking a second language is a huge plus. Good luck!

Any new grads start in a position other than acute care?
I graduated Dec 2009 with my ADN and finally landed a great job! I am so thankful!! I'll be working as a home care planner within a hospital facility for a healthcare company that offers many pt services (including long-term care, home care, hospice and even their own in-house acute care facility). While I will be working with dr's, case workers and interviewing pt's and their families, I will not be giving direct acute care. I think I will really learn a lot from this position and am very excited about it. I know I want to pursue my masters in family or womens health in the future, so will this lack of acute-care experience affect my future prospects as an RN? Since I am technically working in an acute-care facility, w/ acute pt's, does it count as experience? Will I be missing out? FYI, I live in NYC where all RN jobs are scarce.

Stay positive! The hospital where I did my externship didn't hire me due to budget restrictions, but a friend of mine was hired at the hospital where she was working. Do your best to impress and stay positive!!
